Teaching Neurodivergent Pupils in Mainstream

Teaching Neurodivergent Pupils in Mainstream

Teachers,

?

?????????????????????by now you would’ve been getting to know your classes and perhaps you recognise the strengths and needs of some of your neurodivergent learners.? But working with a new class can be tricky. So, over the coming weeks, I’m going to be giving you nine simple strategies for differentiation and behaviour that you can use in the classroom.

?

I promise you that you will not need to do any extra planning. Most of these ideas are things you can do in the classroom as you teach. And they require very little equipment and only a tiny amount of forethought.

So here is my first.

?

Neurodiversity and Differentiation Tip 1

?Did you know that the average Neurotypical person takes six seconds to process and instruction? In other words, if you’re not leaving at least six seconds, between instructions it’s likely that your neurotypical children are not getting all the information.

?

That that sink in… for six seconds! :-)

?

?

For your neurodivergent learner may need to leave 15 to 30 seconds between instructions, or in the case of ADHD pupils, you might need to give them one instruction, ask them for a response for understanding, and then continue with the second instruction. My blog I’ll tell you more about processing and working memory and give you a quick example of how you can use this knowledge in the classroom
