Teaching in the Age of AI: One Discussion at a Time

Embracing the Use of ChatGPT with Grade 8s

The first question we might ask ourselves is: Does the rise of ChatGPT destabilise the purpose of homework and research projects? This question is, of course, debatable. Some may argue that ChatGPT is a threat to our teaching and learning because learners can simply copy and provide unverified answers. On the other hand, some believe it is not a threat because it helps learners beyond classroom walls. However, the fact is that the rise of technology did not start with ChatGPT; the invention of AI is just another wave of technological development. Therefore, it is without a doubt that ChatGPT can be a force for good and perhaps should not be discouraged but embraced.

My Own Experience

As a young professional, I find it useful and convenient to integrate ChatGPT with various learning materials to prepare for my lessons. It generates information in a conversational manner, making it easier to connect information with various sources. For example, ChatGPT assists me in planning in a way that accommodates learners with different learning styles and abilities, including suggesting videos and images that I can utilise during my lessons.

Embracing ChatGPT as a Tool for Learning

There are different strategies that teachers can employ to embrace ChatGPT as a learning tool. Firstly, teachers should be honest with learners about the pitfalls and benefits of using ChatGPT. For instance, using ChatGPT to plagiarise or copy and paste can rob a learner of the chance to grasp the depth of a concept they are researching, leading to unsatisfactory results or poor performance. Conversely, the benefits of using ChatGPT include quicker access to information, exposure to current technological trends, and a variety of responses that provide different perspectives.

My Tips for Learners

Here are a few tips I give to my learners:

  • Phrase questions correctly so that ChatGPT provides relevant responses. Each question should be aligned with the topic or subject.
  • Use ChatGPT to broaden their perspective on a topic and avoid relying on it as the main source of understanding the subject matter.
  • Incorporate ChatGPT responses with the prescribed material provided by the teacher.

Learners' Experiences with ChatGPT

My learners find it easier to do their projects using ChatGPT since I encouraged them to use it correctly. One of my learners said:

"Using ChatGPT is a fascinating experience. It's like having a knowledgeable companion by my side helping me with various topics. I got help with my English homework." Another pointed out, "My own experience with ChatGPT is that it is nice to use it and other AI tools on social media platforms. It's easier for me because I can search for information while I'm on social media without leaving the platform."

Tips from My Learners:

  • Summarise in your own words. Write the responses in your own understanding and ensure that you do not copy.
  • Use it to seek clarification, not to do homework for you.
  • Avoid direct answers. Don’t ask ChatGPT for actual answers to your work but apply your own critical thinking skills or be critical of the generated answers.

With all that said, ChatGPT should be embraced by both teachers and learners to exploit the benefits of using it. The educational landscape is evolving, and it is evident that ChatGPT is valuable and can contribute to creating a community appreciative of technology. The end game in education is not about replacing human teachers but enhancing their capabilities and ensuring they keep pace with change.
