Teachers Urged to Embrace Alternative Income Sources for Retirement
The Secretary to the Education Service Commission, Dr. Asuman Lukwago, has urged teachers to engage in alternative income-generating activities to secure their future after retirement.
Speaking at a Capacity Building Workshop for Kyambogo College teachers, Dr. Lukwago emphasized that teaching should not be the only career focus for educators, encouraging them to explore innovative ventures alongside their profession.
Diversification for Financial Security
"Teachers should stop thinking that the only job they can do is teaching. They need to be innovative and explore other income-generating activities," he said.
He further advised teachers to value and invest in their families, noting that strong family support plays a crucial role during retirement.
Early Retirement Planning Key
During the workshop, Victor Obua, a Commissioner in the Ministry of Public Service, educated teachers on the importance of early retirement planning, particularly in accumulating assets that will sustain them beyond their teaching careers.

"Teachers need to start planning early for their retirement by investing wisely in long-term assets," Obua stated.
Continuous Sensitization Needed
Meanwhile, Kyambogo College Head Teacher, Stanley Mugume, emphasized the need for continuous sensitization of teachers, particularly on Vertical Mobility Education in the education system.
"Teachers should be regularly educated about career progression opportunities and how they can advance within the education system," Mugume noted.
He also called on the Education Service Commission to address teachers' challenges through more capacity-building workshops.
"These workshops should focus on equipping teachers with the necessary skills and knowledge to navigate career development and financial sustainability," he added.
The workshop aimed at empowering teachers with financial literacy, career progression insights, and alternative income opportunities to enhance their professional and personal well-being.
