The Teacher's Guide to Changing Careers

My book is finally done.?I wanted to create and share a guide for teachers to get out of a K-12 classroom and into a corporate role. I wanted to help teachers understand how to transition, make a career change, and just be happy and financially secure in their decision.?

The book covers 3 phases of this transition, this way to make a life change. It's a roadmap for you to follow to make not just any change, but a change that is the right fit that you can build upon and grow professionally and financially.?

The first four chapters discuss The Journey Out.?

These chapters are meant for us to bond, to commiserate, to see that you are not alone.? But most importantly, they are meant to motivate you to decide to take the leap, to say with gusto you want a new career, and to figure out what you should do next to make it happen.?

  • Chapter One:? Deciding to Leave Teaching (My Story)

How I knew it was finally time for a change.

  • Chapter Two:? You Are Unhappy, But You’re Not Alone

Change is scary, but staying is scarier.?

  • Chapter Three:? My Journey Out & The Lessons I Want To Share With You

How I left the classroom and journeyed into the corporate world.?

  • Chapter Four:? Don’t Say No (Setting Up Your Future For Success)

Suggestions for what you can (and should) be doing to support a change while still teaching.?

The next three chapters guide teachers through Discovering Your Future.?

Now that you know you want a change and did the work in the first few chapters to self reflect and assess your strengths and what you want in a next career, the next chapters help you address things like:?

  • What job can I do?
  • What companies offer that job?
  • What industries can I join?
  • What products, solutions, or services would I be supporting??
  • How do I talk about my career change/career transition??

Answer these questions as you work through the next chapters.

  • Chapter Five:? Develop A Growth Mindset & Find What Fits You

Overcome your fears? and research what Industries & Companies are out there.

  • Chapter Six:? What’s Possible? Discover Your Next Career

Discover what career and jobs are right for you.?

  • Chapter Seven:? Building A Personal Brand & Telling Your Story?

Develop your personal brand and determine how you can share your story.?

The next two chapters support Putting Your Plan to Action.?

By now you can tell your story and know how and why you’re a great fit for your next career move.? But how to make that happen? These chapters address that.?

  • Chapter Eight: LinkedIn, Resumes, Cover Letters, & References?

Resumes can be a beast, but with the right mindset a resume can be conquered.?

  • Chapter Nine: Networking, Outreach, & Interviews?

Applying online is not working. That’s because the secret is in networking.

The last chapter is motivation.?

It’s 9 success stories of teachers I know who have left the classroom and have built a new career.?

None got their start in EdTech. Almost all found their first opportunities elsewhere: hospitality, insurance, learning & development, software/tech, business ownership, and consulting agencies.?

You’ll hear from?

  • Christian, a former HS math teacher who is now a Sr. Actuarial Analyst.?
  • Penny, a former HS physics and chemistry teacher who is now the VP of Global Learning.
  • Danica, a former 1st grade and Kinder teacher who is now a Customer Success Manager.
  • Anthony, a former 1st & 2nd grade, and MS teacher who built a career in sales and sales training and is now a Sales Director.?
  • Jenifer, a former 5th & 6th grade teacher turned Principal who is now a business owner.?
  • Shannon, a former international teacher who got into sales but is now a Sales Enablement Specialist.?
  • Elsie, a former HS Spanish teacher who got into marketing as a Project Manager and now Events Coordinator.?
