The Essential Reading List for Innovative English Teachers

"To teach is to learn twice." — Joseph Joubert

Reading helps you improve your mood and mindset. It also helps you learn new things and expands your knowledge. When you read, you are transported to another world; even a dream scenario of fun and relevant educational classrooms.

Relax, de-stress, and expand your knowledge. I encourage you to pick up a book- here are a few of my suggestions that are great for all teachers.

It contains motivational insights, and experiences to give you that much needed boost and reminder that you are not alone in the ongoing struggles of teaching. Once done, I highly recommend giving it to another teacher as a gift. Spread the joy.

The English Teachers Companion: A Complete Guide to Classroom, Curriculum, and the Profession

It is anchored in the Common Core State Standards and includes ideas for working with ELLs, struggling readers, and technology. After going online for many schools, and now with the hope that many courses are widely accepted to be blended, or fully online, this book helps build teaching skills adaptable to an online classroom. It includes real-life teaching moments, insights from experts, and a community of dedicated teachers. The book can help teachers bridge distances to connect with students, cultivate a strong classroom culture, manage behaviour and distraction, and more.

How to Teach Speaking

The Art of Public Speaking

Author: Stephen Lucas

The Art of Public Speaking is a customisable resource for experienced and novice instructors, with teaching aids and confidence-building support. This book is perfectly coordinated with Connect, McGraw-Hill Education's groundbreaking online program, and it provides a proven set of teaching and learning tools that are unmatched by any other public speaking book.

Practical English Usage

Author: Michael Swan

Now, this book is a common factor for English educators, especially for most CELTA instructors; it’s one of their required books. The reason being is that the guide helps English teachers to build confidence and teach grammar effectively. It covers common grammatical issues, provides advice on how to address problems, and includes differences between British and American English. This book improves students' grammar without sacrificing other subjects. It also clarifies weird English grammar exceptions (rule breakers), which benefits all English speakers.

As teachers, we are constantly learning and gaining insight to guide and teach. It’s a drive that many educators can’t resist. So let’s read!
