Teachers Can Un-Retire in Michigan Without Losing Pensions

Michigan has tweaked state law to make it easier for teachers to “un-retire” without risking their pensions. It’s a tool that Democratic state legislator Matt Koleszar, a former school teacher, says may help alleviate a crippling shortage of classroom educators and substitutes.

Under the new rules, the lecturers can come back full time six months after they retire and even start working after only 30 days if they don’t exceed a maximum of $15,100 in pay over a year, he said. They can be substitutes, coaches, IT professionals and fill other roles.

The teacher shortage is part of a broader US struggle to fill about 9.6 million job openings with only 6.4 million unemployed workers. The Michigan law is just one of many potential enticements for so-called un-retirement — luring workers away from the fishing boat or vacation home and back to the office.

Remote Workers Don’t Work as Hard, Says Blackstone CEO Schwarzman?

Blackstone CEO Steve Schwarzman said part of the reason workers are proving difficult to lure back to offices is because they enjoy a lighter workload at home. Schwarzman, whose firm is one of the largest owners of commercial property, said people profited from remote work as they found “they didn’t work as hard” and saved money on commutes, lunches and work attire.

I ran into a lot of obstacles when I was trying to convert my teaching certificate to Michigan and eventually gave up, so opening up that process a bit more would be a good idea.

This isn’t much of a fix. It seems like a good idea that may help. But allow part-time work with pay up to 15k isn’t much work. Also, teachers, not subs are really needed. This can help get more subs, but that’s about it.
