Teachers Appreciation Day
Today is Teachers Appreciation Day. I could write about teachers who have had an influence on my life such as my maths teacher or my mother, who is an English teacher. But, I want to tell you about a teacher who has never taught me.
His name is Pyus, who is on the left hand side of the picture. He is the manager of the Education projects at Singing Gorilla Projects and he is also a teacher. Over the last few days, he took me to schools in the mountains in Uganda. Some of these schools cannot be reached by road and the children walk 2 hours to get there in the morning and 2 hours home in the afternoon. Yesterday, he had arranged for Singing Gorilla Projects to buy 100 irons sheets each for 3 primary schools. This will make sure that the children will stay dry during their classes. The teachers and parents of the school walked for 2 hours, waited in the midday sun to pick up the rolled up sheets and then walked 2 hours home. It was a magical sight watching the snake of silver sheets climb the hill carried by the teachers and parents on their heads. 100 sheets costs £515 - nothing for making sure the children can learn in the dry.
The appreciation of the teachersf for the gift from Singing Gorilla Projects was clear from the smile on their faces. And on Teachers Appreciation Day, a huge thank you to the teachers in these primary schools and a specially big thank you to Pyus for making it happen.
