Teacher Tip of the Day: "Windows of Opportunity"
Creating a window of opportunity at your school. Armoured One is well known for making glass bullet, bomb and break resistant to help secure schools from an active shooter. This is part of a "suit of armor" that we can help provide your staff, students and facility.
An integral part of surviving an active shooter event is creating "windows of opportunity" or seizing those moments when you are not in imminent danger to barricade doors, turn off lights, close blinds and find a safe spot to hide that could give you some ballistic protection. Some schools run drills and practice lock down events. It is more than just locking doors. Preparing your mind and you plan of action is helping you survive when tragedy strikes.
Armoured One realizes that these horrific situations happen in seconds and only last for a few minutes. Those few minutes will change your life forever. It is worth taking some time each day you are at work to prepare or make that “window of opportunity.” As you walk your halls or perform other routine tasks during the school day, begin to mentally rehearse what you would do if an attack happened RIGHT at that moment. Switch yourself into a defensive or protective mode mentally and take in your surroundings. Visualize yourself finding the nearest exit, or the best hiding spot or even having to fight the attacker.
Homeland Security has said over and over…..RUN, HIDE, FIGHT. Mentally rehearse the hypothetical event, ALWAYS picture yourself winning and coming out alive. We are trained as police officers and military vets to picture ourselves winning each and every fight or battle. Having a positive mindset is the basis to possessing a survival mentality. This can be a tough task to accomplish but the more you work through an event mentally, the more you are prepared for it.
Armoured One has made it our mission to care about the safety of our educators and children. This is what our company is founded on. We will continue to send these tips out so please share with fellow teachers, administrators, staff and the ones you love.
