TEACHER FEATURE: SUSAN MATTOON
Arts & Learning Conservatory
We exist to make high quality performing arts accessibe to all children throughout Southern California.
This month we interviewed our Fairmont School music director and long-time ALC teacher, Susan Mattoon.
What first inspired you to become a teacher??
Music has brought so much joy to me since I was very young. I remember being chosen in kindergarten to direct the fellow students to sing "Doe A Deer" (Do-re-mi) Such fun for me! I can't even remember a time that I haven't been singing and playing the piano. Choirs, musical theater, rock bands. You name it!
What is your favorite part about teaching??
When I had my 3 sons in school I met with the principal to discuss the need for an after-school choir. To my surprise, the principal was very receptive to the idea and allowed me to try it out. What began with 60 students, grades 2-6 later turned into a show choir with singing and dancing with many performances in the community. It lasted for 25 years until the pandemic put it on hold. The Centralia District is currently seeking a musical program for me to direct in the fall.

What first attracted you to Arts & Learning?
I absolutely love inspiring children to believe in themselves and develop confidence and pride. As well as team work! When I first met Debora Wondercheck, about 10 years ago, I was stuck with her focus and strength to establish programs in the arts available to all students and schools. I am in "awe" of how far Arts and Learning has come over the years. Amazing people involved sharing their talents and knowledge!
Are there any other projects you are working on that we can promote for you??
In addition to teaching with A & L, I have taught Vocal For Kids with N.O.C.E for over 10 years. As well as teach privately voice and piano.
What advice would you give to a new performer? Any skill that you have found helpful in the arts that have translated to other disciplines?
My advice to any new performer? Do your homework! That means study voice. The exercises, theory, etc. You may be a natural born singer but you can always improve your style and technique so you can maintain your vocals without doing any harm. As always., my mantra has been "believe". Remain positive!
