Teach Your Skills [Series]- PART 1

People often wonder how to go about teaching their skills online. Whilst this may be an easy to answer question to some people, others are clueless about the actual steps to take.

My advise to people in this regard is to find their 'why'. Start by identifying the main reason for this desire. Why do you want to teach your skills? Is it to become a thought leader, to make a profit or both? Whilst the required steps are pretty much the same in both cases, establishing this from the outset is very important.

There are multiple steps to take to teaching a particular skill or topic however this series would distill it into a 'no fluff' sequence of five action steps.

Let's jump into it, shall we?

STEP 1: Topic Selection

The selected topic would most likely change and evolve with time. Consequently, at the beginning, it is advisable to pick the easiest thing that you can package as a course in the shortest time.

The idea of this first step is simply to get you comfortable with the art and tools of online teaching - the complex courses and programs can follow later. If you pick a complex course, the risk is that you would find yourself stuck in the loop of course and slides preparation for a topic that no one may show interest.

Questions to ask yourself to discover your unique topic:

1. What topics are of interest to me?
2. What is my area of expertise?
3. What area can I build a knowledge brand?
4. Which topic(s) are bankable or profitable?

In the illustration above, your selected topic should be the overlap of any categories that are important to you. Generally speaking, the perfect topic is one represented by the green diamond - where all four categories overlap!
