meet Toby - a day in the life, recruiter diaries

What is a typical day for a recruiter? In this special feature blog, we catch up with one of our expert recruitment consultants, Toby Loft, to find out what it’s like to be a recruiter at the UK’s leading property recruitment consultancy.

Time to wake up…

My alarm wakes me up every morning at 06:30 am, well I say every morning but weekdays only, because who’s getting up that early on the weekend? From that time, it’s a go. No two days are the same in recruitment, so I like to stick to a routine where I can – if it’s a working from home day (thanks to tdm’s hybrid working options), I’ll walk or cycle to the gym first thing, and get my workout done for the day. I’m back home at 08:00 am, having porridge, a protein shake, and a cup of tea, and I’m not lying for the sake of this interview, that really is my breakfast.

I’m responsible for…

I’m a recruitment consultant working as part of the commercial team and specialising in Quantity Surveying, Buying, and Estimating roles. I work predominantly in roles in the North of the UK, from Northamptonshire up to Scotland.

I got into recruitment…

I initially started my recruitment career in 2017 within an estate agency, where I quickly worked my way up to senior-level roles. Then, I joined tdm in July 2022, and I was able to transfer my specialist property knowledge into an exciting new market.

Before my first interview at tdm, I’d done my due diligence and researched the company and certain things stood out to me, for example, I got the impression that they had a friendly, close-knit team from their LinkedIn social posts, and this is something that I was looking for in my next role. In other roles, I experienced strong competition between colleagues, and while a little bit of competition is healthy, I was shown a different side that was not. At tdm, that’s not the case, we’re encouraged to work as a team and support each other, which is really important to me.

My typical day…

As I said, each day presents itself with new challenges. However, each morning I’ll have a team meeting with the north development team to share goals for the day, discuss how to achieve those goals, and generally chat about queries – our team is small but focused, and we really enjoy spurring each other on each day. Then, my responsibilities differ from headhunting candidates for a new vacancy, calling candidates to get to know them better, getting out emails and messages, to planning content on LinkedIn for the week. In the evening, I’ll set aside time to make calls because as is the nature of recruitment, it’s easier to catch people on their mobiles after working hours – but as we always say, you get out what you put in.

I love recruitment because…

Working in recruitment is extremely rewarding – at the end of the day, work is a big part of people’s lives and I’m contributing to the positive change in my candidates’ lives through opening new doors as well as making life easier for my clients. And I love talking to people, I work on roles in a large part of the UK, so I encounter different personalities all the time.

After work…

I love to unwind in the evening by cooking dinner for me and my partner, it really takes my mind elsewhere. As well as watching TV or playing football – I’m a huge spurs fan.
