TDK — Who We Are Today

TDK — Who We Are Today

Steeped in a rich and diverse history, yet firmly anchored in the present with eyes cast toward the future, TDK has never veered away from the mission of creating unprecedented value and being of use to the world.

Getting our start, TDK was founded in 1935 to commoditize ferrite, the world’s first magnetic material, and has grown into a multi-national company providing products and technology of value with the goal of realizing a sustainable society.

With over 103,000 team members working within 250 locations in 30 countries, TDK is a fusion of companies making the most of our diverse personalities, experiences, and skills to create products and technologies that contribute to a sustainable society in a profound way. Today, we are focused on rapid advancement in technologies, such as AI, IoT, and 5G, with a centerpiece being electric vehicles (xEV) and the technology that powers them.

Creating Constant Value Through TDK’s Four Core Businesses

In front of future social expectations, TDK has actively pursued proactive mergers and acquisitions to address the evolution of our core business portfolio constructively.

Up through 2011, our core business focused on Magnetic Application Products (used in many everyday items like disk drives and computers) and Passive Components (which are electronic components that don't require a power source to operate, like capacitors, inductors, and resistors).

Beginning in the mid-2000s, we acquired several companies that expanded our Energy Applications line with power supply systems and lithium-ion batteries, expanded the passive components portfolio and, starting in 2016, we acquired several sensor specialists and manufacturers to enhance our Sensor Application Products line.

Today, our business features a well-rounded and healthy mix of technology-based products that are in line with our foundational values and include:

  • Energy Application Products – 53.8%
  • Passive Components – 26.4%
  • Magnetic Application Products – 9.2%
  • Sensor Application Products – 7.8%

Value Creation 2023 – Our Medium-Term Plan

TDK has been advancing Value Creation 2023, our Medium-Term Plan, to respond flexibly to societal changes while also achieving further growth. Under this plan, we are working to instrumentally contribute to two major social trends: Energy Transformation (EX) and Digital Transformation (DX).

In this strategy, TDK, as a whole, has as its goal the pursuit of Social Value, which helps to address social problems and realize a sustainable society. Our Medium-Term Plan takes into account societal developments and provides chances for fresh social contributions and company expansion.

As a result, a cycle begins to evolve in which further social value is produced while also expanding commercial value and asset value. Additionally, we will work to address the two significant social challenges of energy transformation (EX) and digital transformation (DX), provide customers with solutions that meet their needs, and achieve 2CX, which is the provision of experiences that exceed consumers' and customers' expectations.

TDK’s Priority Markets

TDK has identified the automotive, ICT, and industrial & energy sectors as crucial markets with significant growth potential. By offering a variety of products and making growth investments—including capital investments, carrying out research and development, and M&A in accordance with the rate of change—we help these three markets continue to grow and meet the increasingly complex demands of the market.

Automotive

As part of the global shift towards xEVs and the increasing progress of ADAs (advanced driver-assisted systems), we are positioned with proprietary technologies that enhance safety and the driving/riding experience, as well as support the reduction in environmental impact brought by ICE (internal combustion engine) vehicles.

ICT

TDK is committed to participating in a network society in a valuable way. We’re leveraging proprietary core technologies in order to develop and produce a variety of electronic components, such as inductive components, circuit protection elements, and noise countermeasure components, that promote the advancement of ICT (information and communication technology).

Industrial & Energy

A decarbonized society and achieving the SDGs (sustainable development goals) are being facilitated by using renewable energy, such as wind and solar power, and EX (energy transformation). We continue to develop products for energy infrastructure, such as wind and solar power generators, power supply components, and lithium-ion batteries used in mobile devices and xEVs.

Seven Seas Applications

The TDK Group takes a long-term approach to societal challenges. We are dedicated to repairing and protecting the environment globally, upholding human rights, and establishing a sustainable, contented society through our distinctive core technologies and solutions, all in line with our vision for sustainability, "Technology for the well-being of all people."

Seven Seas is a medium- to long-term project by TDK that aims to represent this sustainability concept, and our long-term plan is to provide society with more value through fresh user encounters.

We have identified seven essential areas of interest under the banner of Seven Seas:

  • Beyond 5G – Supporting advances in communication technologies, like ultra-high speed bandwidth communications that will fuse the real and digital worlds
  • IoT – Bringing emotion to connectivity through haptic experiences, e.g., touching a device display and having an actuator respond with vibrations that give a person the sensation of actually touching an object.
  • Robotics – As robots become more valued partners, technology like optical image stabilization (OIS) will communicate information, producing unique experiences.
  • AR/VR – Opening a whole new world before your eyes, AR/VR will be enhanced with ultrasmall, full-color laser modules that will offer an unbelievable experience, allowing you to interact with friends or journey through an entire trip.
  • Medical/Health Care – Monitoring your health accurately anytime and anywhere will function through wearable devices that sense and track biometric information and will even detect illnesses at an early stage.
  • Mobility ADAS/EV – Think next-generation advanced driver assistance systems that are safe, secure, and sustainable.
  • Renewable Energy – Very soon, sustainable energy will bring stable energy supplies through the use of energy storage systems (ESS), including the expanded use of lithium-ion batteries.

To Sum Up

Some values have stayed the same since our founding, while others have continued to evolve. We are prioritizing our fundamental values while embracing innovation to pave the road for future growth and ensure its viability in this complex and rapidly changing society.

TDK's working culture is driven by a unique venture spirit that fosters entrepreneurial thinking, empowered decision-making, and constant self-renewal. We strive to work with vision by being creative, rising to all challenges, and fostering trust with our customers, our employees, and our shareholders and stakeholders.
