TDK Fully Embraces Sustainability and Renewable Energy Through Our Progressive Commitment

TDK is deeply committed to social and environmental responsibility that restores and protects the global environment for future generations.

In keeping with the 28th meeting of the Conference of the Parties (COP 28), United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, convening from November 30 to December 12, 2023, TDK climate change initiatives are dedicated to maximizing a sustainable society through enhanced energy efficiency that utilizes renewable energy sources at our sites, where our product development and business activities emphasize environmental protection and social advantages.?

Concurrently, we are investing in our team members as we continue to cultivate and expand our culture of accountability to future generations. We emphasize the significant contribution of our actions, advanced technologies, and innovative solutions in fulfilling our commitment.

Championing a Sustainable Society for the Well-Being of All People on a Global Level

TDK Group strives to restore and protect the global environment while promoting respect for human rights. Leveraging TDK’s proprietary core technologies we've developed since our inception, our goal is to bring to life the society espoused in our sustainability vision—technology for the well-being of all people—and to be a vital contributor in this pursuit.

Through our cutting-edge technologies, design-forward solutions, and proactive business strategies, we are committed to operations and manufacturing practices that foster a sustainable society and advocate for the welfare of everyone.

UN Sustainable Development Goals – A Shared Blueprint for Peace and Prosperity

In response to the global emergency brought on by climate change as well as to address the political, economic, and environmental challenges our world is facing, the United Nations developed the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The SDGs are a collection of 17 interlinked global goals designed to be a "blueprint for achieving a better and more sustainable future for all." The goals were set up in 2015 by the United Nations General Assembly with the intention that they be reached by 2030.?

TDK, through our technologies and shared values, has chosen to focus on these six goals that most closely reflect our overall values and vision, supported by our business operations:

Our Commitment — 100% Renewable Energy Operation by 2050

Based on our TDK Environmental Vision 2035, we are targeting to halve the CO2 emissions intensity from a life-cycle perspective by 2035 (vs. FY2015) and 100% renewable energy with net zero CO2 emissions by 2050. In addition, TDK seeks vendors that have procedures in place to minimize Scope 2 emissions (indirect CO2 emissions) and Scope 3 emissions (up and downstream of their own businesses).

With established facilities, including manufacturing operations, research and development institutes, and related sales and administrative locations, TDK’s total global footprint exceeds 250 sites in over 30 countries and regions, all working towards our sustainability vision. This includes our commitment to working towards a viable circular economy based on renewable energy resources, recycling, remanufacturing, and reuse.

“There’s a saying that a society grows great when people plant grape vines or trees that they will never sit in the shade of—I think that is what TDK is doing. Today’s top management realizes that the activities that they’re investing in will not pay dividends now while they are here but for future generations of not only TDK but also of society. So, TDK is hoping in the future to continue to reduce our impact on climate change and on the environment by reducing our overall greenhouse gas emissions, as well as increasing our activities regarding biodiversity, implementing circular economy concepts within and across our business, and becoming a leading sustainability organization around the world.”

TDK Converts 100% of its Manufacturing Sites in Japan to Renewable Electricity Operation in July 2023

In 2023, TDK’s 25 manufacturing sites in Japan were all successfully converted to 100% renewable electricity operation. TDK’s manufacturing sites in other countries are following this same pattern through the use of photovoltaics, geothermal power, hydroelectric power, and wind power.

Asama Techno Factory in Japan has converted to 100% renewable electricity in 2023.
TDK Electronics Nashik Factory in India sources 50% of its electricity from its own photovoltaic system.
TDK Philippines has switched to 100% geothermal power in 2022.
TDK Foil in Akureyi, Iceland uses 100% hydroelectric and geothermal power.

TDK’s Contribution to the SDGs Through Our Products?

With TDK’s Seven Seas, we have identified growth applications where TDK will provide value to society via our technologies. These seven growth applications include Beyond 5G, IoT, Robotics, AR/VR, Medical/Healthcare, Mobility ADAS/EV, and Renewable Energy.

While the connection between these applications and sustainability might not be obvious in all cases, here we would like to illustrate how, through our technology, we are providing a valuable contribution not only to growing markets but also to the SDGs and society itself.

Here is how we contribute to the specific SDGs:?

Goal #3 - Good Health and Well-Being

Products contributing to health technologies, monitoring systems, and safe-driving functions:

Goal #7 - Affordable and Clean Energy

Products using cutting-edge technologies to increase the world’s renewable energy supply through constant, safe, and secure sources:

  • Our diverse technologies promote Smart Energy, Photovoltaic, and Wind Power Generation through electronic components necessary for the creation and storage of renewable energy.

  • We support advanced mobility through the manufacture of critical components used in xEVs, xEV Hyper-fast Charging Systems, and E-bikes.

  • TDK offers an extensive range of electronic components used in Smart Metering for Power Supplies.

Goal #9 - Industry, Innovation, & Infrastructure

Products that offer innovative industrial applications and build resilient infrastructure:

  • TDK’s extensive lineup of actuator products, RF products, sensors, and much more are integral to Smart Devices and Tracking in both the consumer and industrial verticals.

  • Our ultra-miniature full-color laser modules display crystal clear imagery through AR/VR smart glasses used in multiple applications.

Goal #11 - Sustainable Cities & Communities

Products to safeguard and secure homes and provide safe, comfortable transport systems within communities:

  • We are revolutionizing the user experience and reducing power consumption in IoT-related products.

Goal #12 - Responsible Consumption & Production

Battery systems that provide responsible consumption and power systems for a full range of products:?

  • To improve Infrastructure Power opportunities, we provide technologies that support energy sources, such as high-capacity rechargeable batteries, lithium-ion power sources, and much more.

  • TDK produces design-forward sensor technologies that improve Smart Devices and Tracking Systems to create a smart society.

Goal #13 - Climate Action

Products expanding and promoting renewable energy and e-mobility:

  • We approach renewable energy as the new normal through products that support Smart Energy, Photovoltaic, and Wind Power.

  • Consumer Electronics and Home Appliances use TDK’s energy components and storage systems to keep homes running efficiently.

TDK’s Participation in RE100

TDK participates in RE100, or Renewable Energy 100, a global initiative that aims to get businesses to commit to 100% renewable electricity and to target reaching those goals by 2050. The initiative was launched in 2014 by the Climate Group, a British non-profit organization, and continues to grow with over 400 participating companies worldwide.

Looking Toward the Future?

As we move forward with achieving our goals for a better and more sustainable society for all, TDK was awarded #3 on the Best 20 “New Good Companies” List by Forbes Japan December edition (issued on October 25, 2023). We are proud that our commitment and efforts are being recognized and are continuing to be guided by our medium and long-term commitments to a healthier planet and society.
