TCF #8: Is Your Teen Feeling College Ready? College Fairs Can Help

It’s time to shake off the summer slump. August is here, and many students have already headed back to school. And if your student is a high schooler, those college years are getting closer. So, what can your teen do to get ready? One low-pressure option is to begin to attend college fairs.

You can check on the National College Fairs website or search online for scheduled events within your community and its vicinity. Many local community organizations and colleges host fairs throughout the year. And if you do find one or two that you like, keep in mind some of the tips below when you're ready to attend.

Quick College Fair Tips

  • Check the list of schools in advance. If you see one that you’re interested in, make sure to visit the table and get to know the school’s reps. You might establish a rapport that makes you stand out more come application time.
  • Meet with college reps personally to learn about college programs and new developments on campus. Seek information on scheduling visits and interviews; and collect brochures, fliers and other available information.
  • Get cards and names of the reps that you speak to at the fair. Follow up with them via email with questions and for additional information. Remind them of how you met and reiterate your interest in the school.
  • Attend special information sessions and workshops that are offered during the day. There is usually a schedule of events with lists of activities.
  • Look for application fee waiver offers. They are often included in information packets. Check for links and QR codes.
  • Consider all options for exposure to various schools, in terms of upcoming programs that may be offered and special events (e.g. plays, fairs, exhibits). Try to plan visits accordingly, so that you can familiarize yourself with different aspects of campus life.
  • Consider an instant decision option, if offered. It’s not unheard of for small and regional schools seeking students to offer on-site services. Some colleges offer on-the-spot acceptances; but you will need to have your transcript on hand and possibly test scores, if you're not going test optional. Don't rush it, but if you’re fully committed to going to a certain school, it could be worth considering.
  • Ask about…anything and everything that will help you to make an informed decision.

Overall, when you're college hunting, the more you know about a school, the better. And college fairs allow you to get more personal insights and information.
