#TBT to #essXaustin22 - brief thoughts on the Escape Room success and teamwork
It’s Hard to believe its been a whole week since the Perkins Coie - E-Discovery Services & Strategy Summit, #essXaustin22, was in full swing.
For #ThrowbackThursday, lets look at one week ago, when I and several of my teammates were fortunate enough to do a 60-minute escape room for our team building / fun nighttime activity.
Not only were we randomly signed up for the hardest room they had, one with a 90% failure rate, despite only one of us having ever done an escape room, but we beat it, and with a clue and almost 10 minutes to spare!
Another ESS team had been assigned a less challenging room (close to 40% success rate per the staff), and they just destroyed it, with about half the time left on the clock!
After we were done, and some of the team departed, we began to chat with the staff while waiting for the second shuttle bus. They were amazed that we were co-workers on a department retreat, and not just a bunch of friends, because we worked better as a team than the other corporate groups they see. It was very heartwarming, and we immediately said it’s probably because we ALWAYS work as a team in our department, and as I have thought back on that moment, the more it rings true.
Every single day we work as a multidisciplinary team of attorneys, project managers, and technologists, and every single day we work together to solve puzzles. Putting the pieces together is an integral part of what we do in eDiscovery, so in a sense, it’s not surprising we were able to overcome the challenges we were presented with. The only difference between these challenges and those we face on any given day, was that we were all together in person, as opposed to spread across the country, collaborating via emails, chats, and Webex calls.

That we were able to come together so seamlessly “IRL” is a true testament to the benefits that come from us fully embracing collaborative technology, and a collaborative business model. Even in “the before times” we worked across offices and time zones on a daily basis. Since the pandemic, we have just taken it up a notch, even becoming a fully virtual practice group. And I think as a whole we are closer than ever.
I am truly honored to work with such an amazing group of people.
