TBI Coincidence or is There More?

“My son has a TBI,” she said to Sarah as casually as if speaking about the weather.
“Really?” Sarah replied, already intrigued.
There is a language unique to those of us who play in the Post-Concussive Playground.
Terms like, TBI, subdural hematoma, and aphasia are not commonplace outside of our realm.
Many of us, by circumstance and certainly not by choice, have learned to speak with what amounts to a medical accent. It goes with the territory.
And so the conversation with one of her coworkers unfolded in a way that Sarah never saw coming as her coworker shared that her son was indeed a brain injury survivor.
What happened next was something you just can’t script.
“I love HOPE Magazine,” she continued. As you probably already guessed, by now she had Sarah’s complete attention.
“I got to the last page of this month’s issue and saw your picture. I’ve been a reader for a while now, and NEVER knew that you published it!”
Sarah shared her story with me when you got home that night. I was both delighted and unsurprised.
Over the years, there have been far too many chance meetings and uncanny coincidences.
Most leave me wondering if Sarah and I are indeed walking a predetermined path, cast in roles we never expected, living the lives we are supposed to live – but being the last to know about.
And again I am reminded that you just never know whose life you might touch.
A generous act, a kind word, an encouraging comment can change the course of someone’s day – and in some cases, it can change their very life.
Peace.
