Taylor Fritz and Coco Gauff work so well together. They make it a great team. Their chemistry on the tennis court lifted a victory over Leylah Fernandez and Felix Auger-Aliassime in a mixed doubles match on Sunday for the United States, 7-6 (2), 7-5.
The mixed doubles victory earned the United States a 2-1 win over Canada.
Auger-Aliassime and Fernandez had the opportunity to top Group A and qualify for the quarter-finals with a win. Still, they must wait until Tuesday to hear the outcome of the USA's match with Croatia.
The victory for the United States was crucial. In addition, this is a feel-good win for Fritz, who wasn't too thrilled about losing in the singles match, but it all paid off, and he redeemed himself in the mixed doubles match with Coco. He gave so much credit to Gauff for leading the team.
Gauff has been playing sensational both in her singles and doubles matches. Her counterpunching and confidence in the baseline helped her have the edge over Fernandez. Gauff defeated Fernandez 6-3, 6-2 to win her first match of the 2025 season.
Fritz/ next test is to go up against Borna Coric, while Gauff will take on Donna Vekic.
