Taya’s new wheelchair

Mobility equipment can change a child's life, but where do you turn when the NDIS doesn't cover the equipment that you need???

The Variety We Move Grant supports families to purchase life changing equipment to increase physical development, independence, and social inclusion. The primary aim of this grant is to provide mobility equipment that is not easily available through statutory services.?

Taya is a fun, creative, gentle, and kind girl who enjoys school and getting out in the community with her family and friends.??

Taya was born with muscular dystrophy which is a progressive and degenerative muscle condition and uses a wheelchair to get around. Her old wheelchair had many limitations and she constantly worried about not being able to access stairs or fit the wheelchair through doors.??

Taya told us, “At the beginning of Year 6 my old wheelchair broke, and I had to get pushed around for two weeks in a manual chair. It was annoying, uncomfortable and it didn’t fit correctly to my desk in the classroom.”?

The family started to withdraw and not participate in everyday activities as it was too hard to get out with Taya’s old wheelchair.?

“We were so desperate for a new wheelchair for Taya, they are like her legs, we had explored lots of other avenues with the hope of getting this. Variety was our last hope,” Taya’s Mum said.?

“We applied for the Variety We Move Grant after being told about it from Taya’s support coordinator and the process was easy.?

“The new wheelchair has changed Taya’s life; it’s changed our whole family’s life.”?

Our?We Move Grant?helps families, like Taya’s, purchase mobility equipment that could change their child's life.??

This equipment, which is not easily available through statutory services, could increase physical development, independence, and social inclusion.?

We will consider grant applications for almost any equipment to support a child living with a disability or long-term health condition and assists their mobility.??? ? Some examples of equipment we have funded:?

  • Wheelchairs?
  • Car seats?
  • Adaptive Bikes?
  • Race Runners?

  • Equine Hoist?
  • Pool Hoist?

?

The average equipment grant for an individual is $2,000, but there is no limit on the amount that can be applied for.??

?

Eligibility only requires the child to have a diagnosis of a disability or long-term health condition, and for the equipment not covered by the NDIS.??

Variety does not consider permanent residency, visa or citizenship status when assessing grants.??
