Tax season is coming?? Here are five tips to pay them with a smile.

Guess where I am??

New York City, baby!

I've been in NYC for a week now, and I have to say, this place is still as amazing as the first time I was here. So far, I've seen comedy shows, met so many inspiring new people, and enjoyed resting and working in the same time zone as my Chief of Staff, Alex. NYC really is the city that doesn't sleep. I can't believe how busy it is, even in the middle of the night. It's got such a buzz! How will I go back to Belgium next week? I'm really going to miss it.

But enough about me! How are you doing? Q2 is just around the corner, and for most businesses, this is where money becomes the main focus for the year. Maybe it's because global tax systems peak during this time of the year, but the world seems to hold its breath, waiting to see how businesses are fairing and how much money you have to pay out.?

Now, I'm no expert in taxes, although I am experienced at paying them, believe me, but from my accountant, and Alex, who's an attorney, I've been hearing how stressful it can be at this time. So, I thought a little affirmation for tax season might be in order. And really, this goes for whatever country you call home.

Giving up our money, especially as entrepreneurs and business owners, can feel incredibly overwhelming. You've worked so hard to make that money, and if you are just starting out, those dollars and euros may seem like all you have to show how successful your business was last year. But the reality is we all have to pay taxes, and the better you are at readying your mindset around it, the better you'll feel about pushing your company forward this year.

To make it through tax season and to better your money mindset overall, why not try out some of the steps below?

  1. Don't hide.?I know you might want to bury your head in the sand and avoid looking at your taxes altogether, but all that will get you is defaults and penalties. So don't do it. Attack your taxes head-on and plan how to get through filing without feeling overwhelmed and stressed - like getting out for a walk, working in 45-minute increments, or planning a massage.
  2. Don't do it alone.?Make sure to get help with your taxes if you're not confident doing them yourself. Hiring a tax professional can save you time and stress when it comes to filing, plus they can help ensure that your taxes are done accurately. So don't be afraid to seek professional help if needed.
  3. Breathe.?It can be scary to hand over money you've earned, especially if you pay taxes once a year on a self-employed salary. It seems like a lot at once, but it will be okay. Take a few minutes to breathe each time you feel anxious - try out the box-breathing method by breathing in for 4, holding for 4, out for 4, and holding for 4. Repeat for a few minutes until you notice your anxiety lessening.?
  4. Take it one step at a time.?Seriously. Don't get ahead of yourself. Go one document at a time, one asset at a time, and soon it will be all over. Remember to take small breaks in between tasks, reward yourself when you make it through a daunting task, and practice self-care.
  5. Celebrate.?Paying taxes is not a bad thing; it means you've made money and your business is doing well. Paying taxes, even a lot of taxes is a crucial indicator of how well your business did this year! Celebrate that, even if you're anxious about paying taxes this year. Take a moment to acknowledge how far you've come as an entrepreneur or an adult and with filing your taxes.???

Once you know what you are up against, you can adjust your mindset and take steps to get your taxes done without so much stress! Plus, it will help you plan for next year. Do you do it yourself again? Hire someone to do it for you? How do you want your business to change this year to help you with your taxes next year?

All information is good information, even if it's scary to collect at first.

Knowledge is power.

Wishing you a wonderful two weeks,
