It's time to file your tax declaration in Germany

It's that time of year again in Germany – time to file your tax returns! Whether you're a first-time filer or a seasoned pro, here are three tips to help make the process a little easier:

  1. Gather all necessary documents: Before you begin filing your taxes, make sure you have all the income statements, receipts for expenses, and any other relevant information.
  2. When filing, don’t forget to make use of lump sums – for an example, you can get up to 1,200 EUR for income-related expenses (Werbungskostenpauschale) – even if your actual expenses weren’t that high!
  3. Don't wait until the last minute: The deadline for filing your tax return in Germany is May 31st (or September 30th with an extension). Don't wait until the last minute to file – give yourself plenty of time to gather your documents, fill out the forms, and submit your return. This will help ensure that you avoid any penalties for late filing.
