Tata Motors Launches First Hydrogen Truck Trials in India

Driving the Future: Tata Motors Begins India’s First Hydrogen-Powered Truck Trials

Tata Motors, India's largest commercial vehicle manufacturer, has taken a major step towards sustainable transportation with the launch of its first-ever hydrogen-powered heavy-duty truck trials. This initiative aligns with India’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2070 and reinforces the growing importance of alternative fuel technologies in the automotive sector.

A Milestone in Sustainable Mobility

  • Shri Nitin Gadkari, Hon’ble Union Minister of Road Transport & Highways, and Shri Pralhad Joshi, Hon’ble Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, inaugurated the trials.
  • The project is funded under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, reflecting the Indian government’s commitment to green fuel adoption in commercial transport.
  • Tata Motors secured the tender to conduct these trials, evaluating the feasibility of hydrogen-powered trucks for long-distance freight operations.

Government Support for Green Hydrogen

Shri Nitin Gadkari emphasized hydrogen's transformative potential in reducing emissions and enhancing energy self-reliance. He highlighted that this initiative will accelerate the transition to sustainable mobility and strengthen India’s push towards a low-carbon future.

Shri Pralhad Joshi reiterated the significance of hydrogen fuel in decarbonizing India’s transportation sector. He noted that this trial represents a crucial step in integrating green hydrogen into the country’s logistics ecosystem.

Key Highlights of the Hydrogen Truck Trial

  • 24-Month Pilot Program: Over two years, Tata Motors will deploy 16 hydrogen-powered trucks in multiple configurations and payload capacities.
  • Real-World Testing: The trucks will operate on high-density logistics routes, including Mumbai, Pune, Delhi-NCR, Surat, Vadodara, Jamshedpur, and Kalinganagar.
  • Dual Hydrogen Technologies: The trial includes both Hydrogen Internal Combustion Engine (H2ICE) and Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Vehicle (H2FCEV) systems to assess their viability for industrial transport.
  • Advanced Vehicles: The program features the Tata Prima H.55S prime movers (H2ICE and FCEV variants) and the Tata Prima H.28, an advanced H2ICE truck designed for heavy-duty applications.
  • Operational Efficiency: These trucks offer a range of 300 to 500 kilometers, providing a sustainable and efficient alternative for long-haul freight transport.
  • Enhanced Safety & Performance: Equipped with next-generation propulsion systems, the trucks integrate driver-assist safety features and an ergonomically designed cabin for improved comfort and efficiency.

Tata Motors’ Commitment to Green Mobility

Tata Motors continues to lead in the transition towards sustainable commercial transportation. The company has a strong portfolio of alternative fuel vehicles, including battery electric, CNG, LNG, hydrogen internal combustion, and hydrogen fuel cell technologies.

  • Hydrogen-Powered Public Transport: Tata Motors has already deployed 15 hydrogen fuel-cell electric buses in India’s public transport network, demonstrating the viability of zero-emission technology.
  • Expanding EV Infrastructure: The company is committed to expanding electric and hydrogen-powered vehicle adoption across the logistics and industrial transport sectors.

Shaping the Future of Sustainable Transport

Girish Wagh, Executive Director of Tata Motors, expressed pride in leading India’s transformation towards greener mobility. He emphasized the company’s commitment to innovation, clean energy adoption, and sustainable transportation solutions that contribute to national growth.

With these trials, Tata Motors is not only advancing hydrogen-powered vehicle technology but also playing a crucial role in shaping the future of sustainable transport in India.
