Tata Motors Won Three Tenders for Over 3,600 E-buses in 30 Days

Market Impact Factor: High

Amna Mumtaz ?| Junior Analyst – E-mobility

Tata Motors has been at the forefront when it comes to introducing environmentally friendly mobility to India. The Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC), West Bengal Transport Corporation (WBTC), and Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) have all placed significant orders in 30 days with Tata Motors for BEV buses in India, reaching 3601 electric buses. More than 715 electric buses from Tata Motors have been delivered to various Indian cities to date, covering more than 40 million km.

On 23rd January 2022, India’s Convergence Energy Services Ltd (government agency for procurement and deployment of electric vehicles, including electric buses) launched a tender for buying 5,450 electric buses and 130 electric double-deckers and deploying these vehicles in five cities – Delhi, Kolkata, Surat, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. Due to this estimated 1$ billion tender, the electrification of public transport has taken off in the country.

The first order from Delhi for over 1,500 Tata electric buses was placed on the 22nd of July 2022, both WBTC and BMTC participated in the Grand Challenge of Convergence Energy Services Ltd. The operator’s largest electric bus order to date covers the supply, operation, and maintenance of the buses.

In the second order from West Bengal, the operator ordered more than 1,180 electric buses of four different types, including 12-meter low-floor AC, standard floor non-AC, and smaller nine-meter models was placed on the 6th of August 2022. WBTC will primarily deploy zero-emission solutions across Kolkata with these BEV buses expected to start to arrive in 2023.

The third new order for 921 electric buses from the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation which exclusively holds twelve-meter-long low-floor buses with electric drives was placed on the 18th of August 2022. There are 35 seats available on the 12-meter-long Tata BEV bus, with a battery pack of around 250 kWh, and an electric motor of 245 kW power and it is also scalable to range requirements.

India had set a target of EV sales penetration of 40% of buses by 2030 and electrifying the public bus fleet is one of the important parts of India’s ‘Net Zero’ goals. According to PTR analysis, the electric bus market of India is expanding, and these three tenders of Tata Motors will assist in achieving its goal of electrification and also Convergence Energy Services Ltd is on target, as announced in January this year for buying 5,450 electric buses.

APAC OEMs to Develop Small Electric Vans and Fuel Cell Electric Trucks

Market Impact Factor: Low

Humza Farhan | Analyst I – E-mobility

Most APAC Manufacturers have continued to not only focus on conventional NEVs such as BEVs and PHEVs to drive the electrification of the region’s commercial vehicle stock but have also extensively begun entering into the fuel cell electric vehicle market. Since proclamations from countries such as Japan and South Korea, that have outlined Hydrogen Power Strategies to accelerate the transition of vehicles towards carbon neutrality, many manufacturers have branched out their focus into FCEV and BEV technologies.

Toyota Motor Corp. has also recently announced the beginning of operations aimed at developing electric commercial vans as well as light-duty fuel cell electric trucks in the spirit of amalgamating both technologies. Toyota, alongside manufacturers Isuzu, and Hino, has stated that models will be developed to promote the widespread use of electrified vehicles and eventually for the mass market. The project, due to begin in January 2023, will see the vehicles being used to transport goods between Tokyo and Fukushima prefecture, aiming to begin production next year.

Mini vehicles, which in gasoline versions have an engine displacement of up to 600cc, are a segment largely specific to Japan. Mini-commercial vehicles account for about 60% of the country’s entire commercial fleet and cover many areas only accessible to them because of their small size. The project is scheduled to run until March 2030 and is being organized by a Toyota-led commercial electric vehicle coalition, with participation from local governments, logistics, and energy companies. Around 580 vehicles will be built for use in the project.

Cummins Set to Commence Construction of 500 MW Electrolyzer Plant in Spain

Market Impact Factor: Medium

Jannat Wasif | Analyst I – Hydrogen

Cummins is all set to start the construction of its new gigawatt electrolyzer manufacturing plant in Guadalajara, Spain, which reaffirms the company’s commitment to expanding the green hydrogen economy in Europe and globally. Spain was selected last year as the optimal site of a new proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer plant. Earlier this year, the company purchased more than 530,000 sq. ft. of land in the industrial area of Guadalajara, Castilla-La Mancha, where it is now preparing to commence the construction of this plant which, is expected to become operational in 2023. The facility will have the capacity to produce 500 MW of electrolyzers per year, scalable to more than 1 GW per year. It will initially create 150 jobs, with the potential to add another 200 jobs as production continues to grow. With the support of the Spanish government and the European Union, Spain’s hydrogen market has great potential due to which Cummins is investing in this country. This facility will enable Cummins to help European customers transition their energy supply and meet ambitious sustainability goals as well as contribute towards achieving the company’s own carbon neutrality targets. By contributing towards meeting the demand for hydrogen generation technology, this facility will help accelerate the role of hydrogen as a viable alternative energy source in Europe.

The company has also recently announced plans to establish a 500 MW electrolyzer factory in Minnesota, US, as well as expand the capacity of its electrolyzer plant in Belgium to 1GW. Cummins has been a part of many of the world’s hydrogen “firsts” and has deployed more than 600 electrolyzers in 100 countries globally up till now.
