A Taste of Our 8 Practical Tips for Successful Visual Management

Step One – The Acid Test

Let’s start by asking ourselves the fundamental question that should underpin all the visual management in your organisation –

Does everyone in your organisation know whether they have had a successful day or an unsuccessful day today … and what was the reason for the outcome?

This is crucial because it’s the starting point for all the work going forward. There’s a simple way of thinking about this which we feel really helps to get this point across, put simply – “how can your team be expected to win if they don’t know the score…?

A team thrives when they feel their work makes a difference but communication is essential to everyone understanding how their work impacts the bigger picture. Communicating the score is easier than you might think, ‘Dashboard Displays’ are a simple way to show the current status at a glance. Their message is instantly clear to everybody, whatever their involvement in the process and whatever language they speak, it’s about simple, effective, engaging communication of the right, relevant information – that’s the key to success here!

Step Two – Identify Visual Deficits

Identifying visual deficits in your work environment might sound complicated, but it’s not. Think about this simple question:

“Is there visual information missing from the environment that impacts on your workers’ productivity of safety?”

This step is about utilising an opportunity to make your work environment speak, it’s about using effective tools that make a workplace safer and more engaging. One example to think about is floor marking. Effective floor marking is essential to most visual management projects and is used to segregate processes, departments, safe areas, meeting points and many more! Meaningful use of colour adds even more power to your floor marking scheme and keeps these areas front of mind so that there isn’t the risk of someone meandering into an area where it could potentially be dangerous.

Step two is fundamentally about getting you and your team thinking about how visual management can be used throughout a workplace and in various different ways to add value to the workplace.
