As a proud South African, I have a deep love and appreciation for the diverse and delicious cuisine of my country. From my childhood memories of savouring curries to growing up sharing a cold beer with friends at a braai, food and drink play a huge role in the South African culture and lifestyle. And as someone who has travelled far and wide, I can say with confidence that there is truly nothing like the flavours of South Africa.
First on my list of must-try food items is biltong, a dried and cured meat that has been a staple snack in my household for as long as I can remember. It’s typically made from beef, but you can also find it made from game meats like kudu, springbok, and eland. The combination of spices and a slow drying process creates a flavour that is both hearty and satisfying.
Another staple in South Africa is boerewors, a type of sausage that is a staple at barbecues and braais. Made from a mixture of beef and pork, this juicy and savoury sausage is best enjoyed with pap, a maize-based porridge that is a staple in many South African homes. The combination of the meaty sausage and comforting pap is a true taste of home for me.
Another dish that holds a special place in my heart is Cape Malay curry. This traditional dish is made with a blend of spices, chilies, and coconut milk, and is typically served with rice, chutney, and roti. The mix of sweet and savoury flavours, along with the tender meat, creates a dish that is both delicious and filling.

Of course, no meal in South Africa would be complete without a sweet treat to finish it off. My personal favourites are koeksisters and milk tart. Koeksisters are a type of sweet pastry that is deep-fried and then coated in syrup made from sugar, water, and spices. Milk tart, on the other hand, is a creamy and sweet dessert that is made with a custard filling and a crispy crust.
And finally, let’s not forget about the drinks! South Africa is home to some of the world’s finest wines, from sweet whites to full-bodied reds. And for those who prefer beer, our local brands like Castle Lager, Hansa, and Lion Lager are renowned for their unique flavours.
In conclusion, these are some of my personal favourites when it comes to South African cuisine. Whether you’re a local looking to relive some childhood memories or a visitor seeking to experience something new, I highly recommend giving these foods and drinks a try.
