A Taste of Authenticity: Belgium Wine Watchers' Special Tasting
We hosted a truly special tasting session at Belgium Wine Watchers. Over the years, we've built a reputation for quality and reliability, and this event was no exception. There was some debate about the 'authenticity' of the wines we featured, but what better way to settle this than by tasting them?
First in the Line-Up: Clos Vougeot Grand Cru 2004 by Thibault Liger-Belair
Although 2004 is known as a year of contrasts, this Clos Vougeot Grand Cru from Thibault Liger-Belair is a delightful surprise. The 2004 vintage presents a tannic structure that requires mastery but also imparts impressive length to the wine. The nose boasts an aromatic bouquet of tobacco, spices, licorice, cocoa bean, and mushroom. The palate is long and mirrors the nose’s aromas. After an extensive tasting, we confidently concluded that this wine is indeed authentic. However, it’s worth noting that this vintage, from a lesser year, may have just passed its peak.
Next Up: Clos Vougeot 2007 by Thibault Liger-Belair
Produced in a limited quantity of 225 cases, the 2007 Clos Vougeot is a gem. It displays a good, deep crimson color, though not opaque. The nose is richly aromatic with notes of minted black licorice, exuding ripeness and class. On the palate, it reveals big, round, dense, and powerful fruit flavors, balanced with smoky undertones and easy black cherry, chocolate, and raisined fruit notes. The texture is velvety, culminating in a smoky, tobacco, floral, cassis, and sweet candied finish.

" Despite our initial skepticism, both wines proved to be genuinely authentic. The 2007 vintage, a notably good year, delivered exactly what we expected. "
