Tassie Cuts Building Red Tape
Tasmanians will be able to build standard homes in residential areas without the need for council approval under sweeping changes that came into force this week.
The new Building Bill eliminates the need for council permits for many building and renovation jobs, including new homes, carports and outbuildings.
Building, plumbing and demolition approvals will now be based on risk, allowing "low-risk" work — such as small sheds and carports — to be built by licensed builders without the need for a permit.
Even medium-risk work, such as three-bedroom homes, will not need council building approval, provided the work is by a licensed builder and approved by a building surveyor.
The housing and building industry says the changes will save people time and money as there will be less paper work and fewer fees.
