?Tasmanians Respond Positively to the Change of Premier

?The latest EMRS June poll is the first since Peter Gutwein resigned as Premier in April 2022 and was succeeded by Jeremy Rockliff, and the first since the Federal Election in May. The results reveal that support for the Liberal State Government in Tasmania has remained virtually unchanged.

?After excluding undecided voters, support for the Government stands at 39 per cent in June 2022, down by a marginal 2 percentage points from 41 per cent recorded in March 2022. Labor support currently stands at 30 per cent, down by just 1 point from 31 per cent in March. On these figures, the Government is maintaining a clear lead over the Labor opposition.

?The latest poll of 1,000 Tasmanian adults was conducted from the 27th of May to the 2nd of June 2022.

Paul Jamrozik (EMRS’ Managing Director) said, “These latest results are particularly interesting in the light of the unexpected resignation of Peter Gutwein, a Premier who enjoyed a high level of personal popularity, and the recent change of Government in Canberra. At 39 per cent currently, Tasmanians have remained steadfast in their support for a Liberal Government over Labor at the State level, even though Liberal support is down from the 49 per cent recorded at the time of the last State election.”

The current 39 per cent in voter support for the Liberal Government is a notable 9 point lead over Labor. Decided voter support for The Greens showed virtually no change, just 1 point up since the previous poll, standing at 13 per cent currently. A slight upward shift was also recorded in support for an independent or other minor party, by 2 points since March to 18 per cent currently: this total was comprised overwhelmingly of those supporting an independent (15 per cent).

The proportion of voters nominating Jeremy Rockliff as their preferred Premier in the latest poll stood at 47 per cent, down from the 52 per cent support for Peter Gutwein in the March poll.

“This is down, but marginally” said Mr Jamrozik, “and indicates a relatively smooth transition for Jeremy Rockliff to the Premiership. Moreover, it represents a 13 percentage point lead over the 34 per cent currently recorded for Rebecca White, whose support level has risen by only 1 point since March.”

“EMRS suggests that the coming polls will be of particular interest, with the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic diminishing, and economic challenges for the State Government coming to the fore, in no small part due to current global events.”
