Tasmanian Liberal Government Retains Narrow Lead in Voter Support

After a significant fall in voter support for the Tasmanian Liberal Party in May, support for both major parties has stabilised in EMRS’ latest poll of 1,000 Tasmanian adults conducted between the 15th and 21st of August 2023.

After excluding undecided voters, support for the Government currently stands at 38 per cent, a marginal 2-point increase from 36 per cent in May. Despite these small gains, Liberal support is well below the 42 per cent the party enjoyed in February this year. Labor support now stands at 32 per cent, representing a 1-point marginal increase from 31 per cent in May.

EMRS’ Managing Director Paul Jamrozik said, “The August poll shows that voter support is stable and that none of the three main parties have been able to make up significant ground after the steep decline in Liberal support in May.?

“Labor’s support has increased just 1-point, while support for The Greens currently stands at 14 per cent, down 1-point from 15 per cent in May. After a 3-point rise in combined support for an independent candidate or other minor party to 18 per cent in May, the August poll shows that support has fallen slightly to 16 per cent.

“Although the Government is currently 6-points ahead of the Labor opposition in voter support, their lead has halved since February.

“As to the two major party leaders, Liberal’s Jeremy Rockliff has regained ground and now has a 3-point lead over Labor’s Rebecca White as preferred premier. The proportion of voters nominating Jeremy Rockliff currently stands at 42 per cent, a recovery from 38 per cent in the May poll, compared to Rebecca White at 39 per cent, down from 40 per cent in May.

“It remains to be seen whether the results in the May poll, conducted at a time of several widely publicised issues for the State Government, are a one-off or represent a more sustained rebound for the Government.”
