Tarpaulin for Dog Kennels Providing Shelter for Pets

Why Use Tarpaulin in Dog Kennels?

There are several key reasons why many dog owners choose to use tarpaulin in their dog's outdoor kennel. Canvas Tarpaulin protects from the elements, helping to keep dogs dry during rain, snow, or hot sun which is important for their health and comfort. It also blocks cold and harsh winds that can chill dogs to the bone.

Installation of a tarpaulin cover is also very easy and affordable. Tarps are lightweight and can easily be draped over kennel roofs and attached using ropes, clips, or bungee cords. This makes tarpaulin a low-cost shelter option for dog kennels compared to more permanent structures.

Benefits of Using Tarpaulin in Dog Kennels

There are several key benefits to using tarpaulin to provide shelter for dogs in outdoor kennels.

Protection from rain and snow is an important benefit. Staying dry is crucial for a dog's health and comfort. Tarps will keep pets dry and protected when precipitation is falling.

A tarp also offers valuable shade from the hot sun. Many dogs can overheat if left in direct sun for prolonged periods. Tarps block dangerous UV rays and provide a cool shelter area.

Tarps also help block harsh winds and drafts. Cold winds can lower a dog's body temperature and cause them to feel chilled. Tarps create a barrier from wind chill.

Another benefit is that Tarpaulin Sheet help prevent escape attempts. Dogs may try digging under or squeezing through any gaps or holes in fence lines. A tarp secured at the bottom will block these escape routes.

Choosing the Right Tarpaulin Material for Dog Kennels

When selecting a tarpaulin material for covering dog kennels, there are a few key factors to consider:

Vinyl tarps

Vinyl tarps are inexpensive, waterproof, and durable. They are less prone to tearing than other materials. However, vinyl performs poorly in cold temperatures and may crack.

Canvas tarps

Canvas tarps are more breathable than vinyl, so moisture doesn't get trapped underneath. Canvas tarps last several years but are not as waterproof as other materials. Mild water and snow are fine but heavy rain may seep through over time.

Polyethylene tarps

Polyethylene tarps are very waterproof, withstand cold temperatures, and are lightweight for easy installation. However, polyethylene rips more easily than vinyl or canvas from dog claws or chewing. Tarps also become brittle if left in sunlight for prolonged periods.

When choosing between these common tarp materials, consider your dog's breed, climate, and precipitation levels. Heavy dogs or large paw sizes require extra durable vinyl over more easily torn polyethylene.

Measuring and Cutting Tarpaulin for Dog Kennels

To ensure a proper fit, it's important to carefully measure the dog kennel space before cutting or purchasing tarpaulin material.

Measuring the kennel area is the first step. Use a measuring tape to record the length and width, including any roofed areas above the fencing. Jot down these measurements.

For most tarps to function properly, they will need an overhang on all sides of 1-2 feet. This allows the tarpaulin to be properly secured and prevents water from seeping in.

When calculating tarp size, add the overhang measurement to the kennel dimensions. For example, a 10x10 kennel would require a tarp that is 12x12 feet or larger to allow for a 1-foot overhang on each side.

Maintaining Tarpaulin Dog Kennel Covers

To maximize the lifespan of tarps used to cover dog kennels, some regular maintenance is required.

Cleaning and drying is important. At least 2-3 times per year, remove tarps and shake off any debris. Hang to air dry completely before storing or reinstalling. This prevents mold growth.

Checking for damage should be done monthly or after storms. Inspect for tears, cuts, or worn areas caused by dog claws or chewing. Repair or replace sections as needed.

If tarp edges or corners become loose over time, reattaching is simple. For ropes, retie knots tighter. For clips or snaps, reattach where the fabric is loose. Periodic tightening keeps water out
