What Do the Potential New Trump Tariffs Mean?
Incoming U.S. President Donald Trump won’t take office until January 20, 2025. But the results of the recent presidential election are already having a significant impact on America’s logistics industry. A cornerstone of Trump’s campaign was his promise to expand tariffs on imports to the U.S. Specifically, he plans to increase all import tariffs by 10-20% — and raise tariffs by 60-100% on imports from China.
The immediate effects on U.S. supply chains resemble the trends in our industry from June to November 2018. During that time period, Trump’s announced tariff increases led many U.S. companies to move freight into the country quickly, in advance of the new charges. As the ocean freight market spiked more than 70%, ocean container rates quickly doubled.
Already, experts are predicting that Trump’s second presidency will bring dramatic and similar changes for U.S. supply chains . We’re seeing many companies speed up their imports before January, while others are moving production to countries like Vietnam. Nearshoring production in Mexico has been steadily increasing, and should continue to grow. In some industries, like consumer electronics, it’s unclear how manufacturers can completely avoid sourcing products from China. Apple has begun to source iPhones from India , but how quickly can other companies make these kinds of shifts??
