Is that tariff *really* 100% renewable?

Spoiler alert - no, it's not. Not even close.

I'm hearing a lot about "100% renewable" tariffs at the moment, from businesses who are genuinely trying to do the right thing and reduce their carbon emissions, and yet, every single one of them has a whacking great Scope 2 Carbon Emission figure - Why?

It's simple really - the "100% renewable" claim in the tariff you have (likely with one of the Big 6) is, to be blunt, a scam.

Large UK energy suppliers often offer 100% renewable tariffs, but the reality falls short of the promise. While these tariffs claim to source electricity solely from renewable sources, they often rely on purchasing Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) instead of directly investing in renewable infrastructure.

This allows suppliers to continue generating power from fossil fuels while greenwashing their image. Moreover, the pricing structure of these tariffs tends to be higher than standard tariffs, profiting from environmentally conscious consumers without significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Despite this, companies are still required to report their carbon emissions accurately, revealing the gap between their claims and actual environmental impact.

Our Power as a Service (PaaS) model involves generating electricity on-site, from natural gas or green biogas fed CHPs to renewable sources like solar panels or wind turbines. This approach significantly reduces (and could completely eliminate) Scope 2 carbon emissions, which are indirect emissions associated with grid purchased electricity consumed by an organization.

We are able to offer Power as a Service delivering day-round and year-round electricity at 12p/kWh, with the added benefit of waste heat from the process which can be captured and used either directly, or for absorption chilling for additional benefit.
