Targeting millennials with video

Millennials (a.k.a. Gen Y) are those of us born sometime between the early 1980’s and early 2000’s. We mark the end of not only a century, but also the end of an era of traditional marketing and advertising practices. Millennials and video go hand in hand (thanks to mobiles, quite literally).
We're a tricky generation to reach in order to capture our attention:
- half of us would rather watch online videos rather than TV,
- the majority of us prefer to consume media on the go via mobile,
- 50% of us would rather watch a company video over reading a newsletter
- we make up approx. 21% of consumer spending
Brands that successfully market to millennials are primed to profit. It's estimated that Gen Y will spend more than $200 billion annually from 2017, and $10 trillion in their lifetimes.
So how do businesses target millennials with their content:
- Make a demo video: 85% of millennials find these helpful
- Tell customer stories: 69% of millennials find customer testimonials helpful
- Tone down promotion: 2 in 3 millennials loose interest if a video is too promotional.
