Why do we need a system?
Healthcare providers sometimes find it difficult to successfully manage mucocutaneous adverse events. Although there may be several treatment options, the potential adverse events may not always be under control. This frequently leads to dose modifications or, at worst, to discontinuation of the targeted therapy.
It is important to emphasize that with appropriate management, most adverse events can be managed without dose modification or discontinuation, which may impact your oncology outcomes. If the symptoms persist without any signs of improvement, the adverse events should be thoroughly evaluated before treatment modification. Choosing the most appropriate treatment is made easier by taking the following steps:
- Terminology – find the correct diagnosis of the adverse event
- Assessment – identify both signs and symptoms of the adverse event and the impact of such an event for a particular patient
- Reporting of Characteristics – collect and report more in-depth information about the adverse event
- Grading – classify the severity of the adverse event
- Education of you – reconfirm general measures and educate you about the treatments to be initiated
- Treatment - institute most appropriate and effective treatment strategies
To support this process, the TARGET SYSTEM was developed. The letters of this system stand for Terminology, Assessment, Reporting, Grading, Education, and Treatment. In six practical steps, the TARGET-SYSTEM guides you from diagnosis to management of side effects associated with targeted anticancer therapy. Choosing the appropriate treatment is made easier if both healthcare professionals and patients follow the system’s steps. If treatment is started at an early stage, at the onset of an adverse event, the symptoms are expected to remain under control - most of the time.
