Tapping IBL into that Agile vibe
The two days I spent at the Intent-Based Leadership (IBL) Summit in a Denmark evoked the feelings of excitement and anticipation I used to feel at early Agile gatherings.
Likeminded, bright and curious people puzzling over how best to get something that resonates deeply with their personal values, out into the wider world.
The principles and pragmatic techniques of IBL fit so well with the Agile mindset and emergent challenges we face. It was no surprise to find a room full of Agile practitioners and thought leaders from goAgile , Crisp AB and other organisations.
Moving the needle on the difficult aspects of Agile
Agile is characterised as ‘simple but difficult’ ?I interpret the ‘difficult’ aspect to be various facets of leadership: psychological safety, systemic challenges, complexity, behaviour change, engagement and the calibrated delegation of control.

The IBL principle of ‘Tune control to Competence and Clarity’ was a thread running through the summit. This included an interesting session from Joakim Sundén on revisiting the ‘Spotify model’ and how it created the clarity and competence necessary to share control so widely.
Having delivered and facilitated IBL adoption with over 140 people over the last three years. I typically spend over six months with each cohort of trainees and so witness how they incorporate IBL practices into their personal leadership approach. And how it helps them engage with the complexities of their work.
If there is one way to move the needle on the difficult aspects of Agile it must be IBL, or something close to it.
It was reassuring and validating to be in a room full of such experienced Agilists who appear to share that perspective. ?
And thank you to Ole Jepsen and his team for realising his vision to hold such an event in Europe and for choosing such a perfect venue.

1 年Thanks Bazil Arden for the nice words!! This is excactly what I had envisioned, excactly what we had hoped for. A big shout out to Louise Navntoft Larsen, Michael G?the, Jennie M?rtensson, Jenni Jepsen, Peter Russian and L. David Marquet for organizing and supporting the IBL Summit!!! I wonder about IBL Summit 2024…? Whether to do it or not? Would we want to do it in Denmark again, or in UK, Italy, Australia and/or the US? One Summit or “sister Summits” in different geografies? Local people in the committee/committees? Your thoughts? Thanks again Bazil, for your support and reflections??
