Tapart develops British Museum Audio App for audiences to explore over 60 galleries straight from their pockets.

In partnership with the British Museum, Tapart has developed a new audio app that brings over 250 objects straight to audiences’ smartphones and devices. The app includes audio-visual content and expert commentaries on artefacts such as the Rosetta Stone, the Lewis Chessmen, as well as audio introductions to more than 60 of the museum’s galleries.

From ancient Egypt to the Enlightenment gallery, users can dive deeper into collections and content focused on different cultures and themes, explore interactive maps, and navigate their way through the museum based on their interests.

?

The British Museum Audio app is fully accessible before, during, or after a visit, around the galleries or at home, bringing audiences ever closer to collections. It is currently available in five languages: English, Chinese, French, Italian and Spanish, as well as BSL (British Sign Language).

?

The app features one free tour and offers in-app purchases for singular tours in any language, as well as a full tour bundle which unlocks tours and content for permanent exhibitions.

?

Via our partnership, the British Museum is one of the first major museums to offer a fully accessible, WCAG 2.1 AA compliant digital solution for their audiences to enjoy collections. Features such as text contrast, TTS, sign language options and transcripts enable everybody to explore exhibitions, regardless of ability.

Sietze de Jong, Director of Tapart said: “We are proud to work with the British Museum to launch its first audio app. The app is built with Tapart’s fully customisable, easy-to-use digital solution, tailored to reflect the British Museum’s brand identity. Designed with the end user in mind and prioritising accessibility, audiences can now enjoy many of the museum’s highlights straight from their pockets.”

?

Hartwig Fischer, Director of the British Museum said: “Were delighted to offer this brand new way for visitors to make the most out of their experience. The British Museum Audio app puts extraordinary objects and dozens of fascinating galleries in the palm of your hand and allows people to engage with the Museum both before, during and after their visit.”

?

The app is now available to download from Google Play and App Stores and is scheduled to launch on Chinese iOS app stores at the end of April.

The British Museum

Founded in 1753, the British Museum was the first national public museum in the world. From the outset it was a museum of the world, for the world, and this idea still lies at the heart of the Museum’s mission today. The collection tells the stories of cultures across the world, from the dawn of human history, over two million years ago, to the present. Objects range from the earliest tools made by humans and treasures from the ancient world to more recent acquisitions from Africa, Oceania and the Americas, the Middle East, Asia and Europe, as well as the national collections of prints and drawings, and coins and medals. In addition to work in London, the Museum takes part in an extensive programme of loans and tours, both across the UK and throughout the world.?
