In my previous article "Bottled Water Is Hurting More Than Helping Us - Facts You Should Know" I brought to light things that you should know before continuing to grab that plastic water bottle for $2.19 from Walmart, a brief history on where the most sold beverage got its start, and the unregulated bottled water industry that it is.
Some Facts:
Fact—10% of the Earth’s freshwater, an estimated 13 trillion liters, is found in its atmosphere.
Fact—In humid climates, up to 6% of the air contains freshwater. In arid climates, the air still contains an average of 0.7% water.
Fact—Over 700 million people in 43 countries are suffering from a lack of fresh water. This number is estimated to more than double in the next 10 years.
Atmospheric Water Generation (AWG) Is An Old Idea Using Modern Technology.
Water evaporates out of rivers, lakes and the ocean. It's carried up into the atmosphere, where it can collect into clouds (which are actually just accumulations of water vapor). After the clouds reach the saturation point, water droplets will form, which we know as rain. This rain runs off the land and collects into bodies of water, where the whole process begins again.
In 1902 when Carrier invented the air conditioner in 1902, a by-product was distilled water. There have been water generators for a long time, based on the dehumidifier. As air is passed through a cooled electric coil, water condenses.
In 2007 inventor Max Whisson publicized his solution to the world’s water shortage: the Whisson Windmill. This $43,000 windmill passes air over cooling coils, with the generator powered by the windmill. Self-contained and completely green, Whisson claimed that his windmill could produce 2,600 gallons of water a day. However, Whisson couldn’t interest investors to help him get his ingenious idea from the workshop to the marketplace because there was virtually nothing that could be patented.
Today there are 74 companies that claim to produce water-from-air.
Rholand Wahlgren, considered to be the AWG industry's expert with the most research done on AWG hosts a website that lists all 74 companies and white papers from studying the technology. Out of the 74 companies listed, plenty of them have old websites, many are not valid any longer and others have just disappeared bringing a need to update and trim the list into two categories: Players and Pretenders.
Full disclosure: I consulted for an AWG company and then worked full time for 6 months for WatergenUSA, based in Miami, FL. WatergenUSA's parent is based in Israel and regularly publish press releases on the humanitarian work, disaster recovery in the US, and have been named by CES in 2019 as a winner of the best technology for a better world (Although ti is listed as "Watergreen") and recently as one of Time's best inventions in 2019 for their home unit the Genny by Isaac Saul. However, the residential unit is still not available for purchase, bringing doubt that any recognition by normally reputable associations such as the CTA or the likes of Time Magazine's Saul that they actually have had a unit in their possession and seen it in action or not. Watergen is a great company, with patented technology on how they use an algorithm in an attempt to be more efficient and with a manufacturer make their own machines instead of sourcing from overseas.
Yet if it is better priced for the market and allows you to actually have a product, then it is merely a business decision. Take other examples:
One of the most memorable companies in terms of marketing is a company that does not even exist anymore, EcoloBlue. Many sites have only CAD designs of what CAN be made and what could be available.
There are at least two AWG companies whose parent is based in Florida. Quench Innovations are based in the central part of the state, privately held by a married couple. A good-natured team that is trying to make a difference to the world and "quench" the world's thirst. Atmospheric Water Solutions is located in Cooper City, FL and carries a line called AquaBoy that already has a residential unit and has been perfecting it every year. They were interviewed during earlier this year:
There are a handful of other AWG companies based in Florida, a perfect location to set up shop due to the high relative humidity.
NOW WHAT?
I created Renewable Water and Energy Solution in order to be able to provide AWG technology to those in need or could benefit from it. Vetting companies that have actual products on the market and available for purchase, and connect them with sources of renewable energy. There are two obstacles since immersing myself into this industry:
- This is not from Harry Potter world, but in fact, it actually is science and does work. (Although it was featured in Star Wars the film.)
- Retelling the narrative to correct all the snake oil salesmen that have raised funds, promised to save the world and never came through.
The truth is Water-From-Air is possible. There are products available as well that work and project s going on all over the world and industries that will benefit immensely from this technology such as agriculture, cannabis, and of course disaster response. The key is the same with all business and all industries to check off the following:
? Has the company been actually selling the technology? If so talk to their customers, hear it from them what their experience is, not the company. TASTE the water.
? Communication is key. As a consumer or distributor, you need to be able to connect with these people, get replies, and answers to your questions. If this is not the case raise the red ?? flag high.
? Are they reliable? Do they have business experience in other industries? Do they have personal and professional testimonials?
It is truly an amazing industry and I am blessed to be playing a part in it. Now bringing renewable energy into the mix? Now THAT is innovating.....but that will have to wait until the next article.

5 年Thanks for the mention in your article, Elliot. Just to explain about my list of water-from-air equipment suppliers: I must be unbiased and include any firm with an accessible website. I do not believe it is my role to grade companies in a public manner. Besides, there can be legal consequences for giving a company publicly what can be perceived as a negative rating. The? "Case Studies About Water-from-Air" page on the Atmoswater Research website, does, however, point to active companies. I wish more water-from-air firms would take the opportunity to contribute case study information. Sharing more information would benefit the entire industry.
