Tanzanian President Unveils Plans for New Industrial Sugar Factory in Tanga
The Government of Tanzania plans to construct an industrial sugar factory in Tanga to boost local production, cut the country's reliance on imports, and conserve foreign currency. The proposed mill will be established near Tanga Seaport—the second-largest port in Tanzania—and nucleus sugarcane estates positioned along the Pangani River Basin. The project aims to lower foreign exchange expenditure on industrial/refined sugar imports, create job opportunities, and drive economic growth.
President Samia also laid the foundation stone for a 256-kilometre Bagamoyo-Pangani-Tanga Road, a key trade corridor linking Tanzania and Kenya. The road, along with the new Pangani Bridge, will enhance trade, tourism, and regional connectivity. Additionally, the government is working to strengthen the blue economy, having already distributed 35 modern fishing boats, enabling deep-sea fishing. Plans are also underway for a new international fish market in Kipumbwi, the construction of Kipumbwi Port, and a proposed livestock port in Pangani.
These transformative projects mark a significant step towards economic self-reliance, positioning Tanzania as a stronger player in regional trade and industrial development.
