What do you do as a realtor?

Real estate is a broad term and there are multiple subdivisions within real estate. Tanner focuses on investment, property management, and helping clients buy and sell homes.?

Because Tanner’s job as a realtor is entrepreneurial, he wears many different hats. On any given day, Tanner is attending to these main bodies of work:

Staying up to date on local listings. Tanner needs to be a subject matter expert (SME) on all local offerings so he can speak to the different options his clients have.

Building relationships with clients to understand their story and find a home that fits their life stage or sell a home in response to a life event.?

Giving tours of homes based on what Tanner thinks is a good fit and what clients want to see.

Budgeting money for taxes, savings, costs to run his business, etc.?

Marketing and running his social media, letting the community know more about him as a person, hosting community events.

Writing, negotiating, and explaining contracts with clients.

Property management: maintenance with contractors, photographs for listings, customer service with tenants, helping investors manage properties.?

Why did you go into real estate?

Real estate in Yolo County has been in Tanner’s family for generations. Tanner is inspired by his grandmother, Sue, who moved to Davis with Tanner’s grandfather in the late 60s. They were both World World II Jewish refugees seeking freedom and opportunity for their family. Sue invested in real estate and started flipping houses before it became trendy. Today, Tanner manages many of his grandmother’s properties.??

When speaking with Tanner, it was unclear to both of us where his work starts and ends. This is something that Tanner loves about his job. His career is built into his life. He was raised in Davis, California where his mother, Sally, taught him the importance of community involvement and meaningful relationships. Following Sally’s example, Tanner prioritized building and maintaining strong relationships, giving back, and treating others with kindness and respect. These deep-rooted values influence how Tanner approaches work with his clients and colleagues and has helped him to build trust with his clients.

He also feels a great sense of pride carrying on the family business in the town where it all started. He has deep roots in Davis and is excited to build new relationships in the community.

On the flip side, real estate can be an intimidating and unpredictable business. Tanner is an independent contractor and is paid on a commission basis. He can go months without getting paid, but then can make a huge sale that can offset his lean months. Tanner’s wife is a W2 employee and receives a regular paycheck, so they are able to balance their finances accordingly.
