How Pursuing Hobbies Strengthens CXOs’ Leadership

The world is witnessing lots of myths about health, and higher executives are more prone to disorders for a myriad of reasons. Bi-Proficiency is a campaign to bridge the gaps and fix all the loopholes in this regard.

CXOs are always out of time, in fact, it has been estimated that they are left only with 2.1 hours for themselves. And, what's more, excruciating is that this time is never available in a significant chunk; always in form of 10-15 minutes at a different time of the work life.

This is the only time when they can focus on something personal like checking the kids, online purchases, catching the news, or any other pressing requirement.

Now, the CXOs are never away from their work. Whether it is sleeping time, food time, or time for the family- there can be a call anytime!

Such a hard hectic work schedule takes a toll on health- both physiological and mental. And, in the long term, this proves to be counter-productive as well.

While we are staunch believers in never compromising with fitness and devoting a disciplined time to exercising, our research says that perusing a hobby is also great for well-being.

Pursuing a hobby is highly beneficial for corporate leaders now, as their work is complex and stressful now- more than ever! But the problem lies in the amount of attention a hobby demands. But if this 'special time' is strategically managed then this can prove to be a boon in invigorating the mind & body.

And this level of invigoration can never be provided by rest alone!

Occasionally switching off the mind from the perpetuating background intellections is highly important if one wants to enhance the work span and productivity. And this is not an airy-fairy notion but an empirically established result, finding its mention in a Harvard Study !

There are several examples of renowned CEOs fervently devoting time to their beloved hobby. David Solomon- Goldman Sachs's chief executive, performs on DJ D-Sol, Andy Wilson- the Electronic Arts (computer game makers) head practices Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Leo Denault- Entergy CEO is a great fitness freak and is proud to win four ironman medals!

Hobbies are not only about distressing or giving your brain the refreshment it deserves, but they are also about driving excellence in an implicit covert manner.

Let’s discuss it with an example. Example of painting!

If one likes to paint on canvas then it is not about competing with anyone except oneself! If painting is a hobby then one will not be fully satisfied until it has reached the best of oneself. The highest level of vision interpretation & transmutation!

This means it nudges one to be the best version of oneself naturally- without any pressure or inducement. Such a disposition work wonders in the workplace.

Now check if the hobby is music or singing. If colleagues and juniors have also joined your band, and they are better than the CXO at some skillset, then during the performances the higher executive might be mandated to stay at the back.????

This is a lesson in terms of teamwork and humility as well. Whatever the position at the workplace; such hobbies remind us that we all are mortals, not divine. We all have some strongholds and weak points, and such teamwork makes us realize the fact along with the need for group work.

There are shreds of evidence to prove that humbleness at the top position translates to better engagement at the operational level. And no need to elaborate on the explicit benefits with it.

Indulging in a hobby that one loves and accomplishing the self-set targets has various psychological advantages. The sense of control & satisfaction one attains by doing the things loved to the core creates a better balance in mind and body, translating to better work and life balance.

Therefore, hobbies not only enhance the clarity of thoughts but also enhance energy levels and leadership skills.

Paypal head Dan Schulman has remarked that martial arts (his hobby) have taught him more leadership lessons than all the formal education he has received hitherto.

If some of the sports like football or running, or even a jog are the hobby of a CXO, then it would be advisable to get some teammates or colleagues with them. This will facilitate better coordination, more engagement, clarity for the confusion, and better alignment of the units with the overall BHAGs.??
