A Tangible Intervention
As I get older, my parents having left this world it is finally beginning to dawn on me that I'm now in 'Senior Management'. All those years of 'you know what they should do about this and what they should do about that' begin to sound very hollow. Suddenly it's dawning that if there are to be changes in the world it's probably up to me. We all have our unique set of circumstances and experiences and often they are for a purpose. Growing up I was very proud of my parents as they bought and renovated their own house and owned it outright after a few years. The title was 'Fee Simple' and was not encumbered by a Ground Rent, Mortgage or Lien or any of those terribly ominous legal terms for 'claws' that banks and others can have in your sense of ownership. Yet in spite of owning our home outright we were still subjected to a Compulsory Purchase Order to allow for road widening and commercial development. For 15 years the saga continued and we as a family endured non-stop stress because we never were able to rest easy and enjoy the future without constantly thinking: when do you think the process shall begin?
Eventually after many years the issue was resolved and my parents relocated to another neighbourhood and they began the slow process of rehabilitation after all the trauma. Because of this I have been, and remain very sensitised about all property and land related disputes and inequalities.
This love of a home, a warm fire, a sense of place is core to the Irish psyche and when I see that after 100s of years of deliberations that the issues of land, homes and families are still being debated in Ireland I begin to get very upset. Why did we want independence, was it to control our own affairs? Why were the absentee landlords hated so much? Did they value their capital returns more than the people who created their wealth? The Irish migrated all over the world and here in Australia that desire in having one's own block of land to call the 'Castle' is I believe a derivation of our Irish desire for that home place.
Since the Global Financial Crisis Ireland has struggled to re-emerge from the debris and there are signs that progress is being made. Thousands emigrated to ease the burden, others stayed and dug in. Those of us that travel, promote our homeland to the point of annoyance to our many non Irish friends and we want Ireland to signify the three core aspirations of Tangible: Leadership Excellence Inspiration
Ireland as a nation is a work in progress, in recent years the economy is showing signs of recovery yet the boat still has leaks in some corners and many are in denial that we must apply the Balanced Score Card to our society and focus on all four key areas:
Our Customers: Businesses,Trading Partners, Investors & Visitors
Our People: Young, Middle Aged, Old and all those needing support both at home and overseas
Our Processes: Things have to be done professionally with compassion by putting relationships before outcomes.
Our Finances: Things ultimately need to be sustainable and add up to ensure we provide a foundation for future generations.
In New York on August 18th next Brian Reilly and Austin Byrne are presenting their solution to this century's Land Question at a press conference at Tangible's invitation.
