Tampa International becomes only North American airport to land a spot in excellence awards

Tampa International Airport has earned its wings from the trade association for the world’s airports, which has recognized TIA for its excellence in customer service.

The honor from Airports Council International recognizes airports which have consistently delivered excellence in customer service, according to a news release. The ACI Airport Service Quality program is a worldwide service quality measurement and benchmarking service that questions passengers while at the airport.

The ACI director general’s Roll of Excellence identified Tampa International as the only North American airport to receive the recognition.

“In an increasingly competitive airport industry operating environment, continuous service improvement is a key ingredient in business performance," ACI World General Director Angela Gittens said in a statement.

The recognition speaks to TIA's growth and quest to retain talent.

TIA was recently ranked as No. 20 on a list of the fastest-growing midsize airports in North America, according to The OAG, an online travel data company. It was also named among the best airports in the country for business travelers.

  • Haikou Meilan International Airport (in Hainan, China)
  • Sanya Phoenix International Airport (in Sanya, China)
  • Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport ( in Chongqing, China)
  • Narita International Airport ( in Narita, Japan)
  • Sheremetyevo International Airport (in Moscow, Russia)

The airports will be formally inducted onto the Roll of Excellence at the ACI Customer Excellence Global Summit in Halifax, Nova Scotia on Sept. 12.

I've been visiting family in Clearwater for 30 years, flying to/from TIA from NYC airports several times a year, and have always found it to be a stress-free experience. As they added nicer eateries to the main terminal and at the gates, and then expanded the infrastructure, it has only gotten better. Expansion and upgrade work is continuing, so I expect them to up their game. I look forward to what they're planning for travelers.
