Taming the Fear Response
How do you cope with your fears and anxieties? I know it’s a sensitive subject but we live in a world that gives us far too much to be worried about. The problem is so widespread and pervasive that it’s become an integral part of our culture. So, how can we neutralise the shadows of fear that influence so many of our thoughts and feelings and behaviours?
You might’ve heard that the best way to deal with your fears is to confront them head on. Whilst this might be an uncomfortable experience, we know that fear does not survive for long when faced with the light of reason. When you turn to face your fears and ask yourself why you’re afraid or why you’re allowing anxiety to dominate your thoughts and feelings, you trigger an automatic reaction in your brain that turns down the fear response and turns up the logical powers of reason and objectivity. Fear has no place in the realm of reason. A calm, logical perspective eliminates the shadow of fear.
In many ways, fear is a habit that prompts us to interpret events in negative or threatening terms. In reality, the situations we face have no meaning or emotional content in themselves. We are the ones who add meaning to everything. Have you ever thought about that? When we add fear or anxiety to whatever we’re experiencing, we see the situation as a source of potential danger. When we adopt a more relaxed, calm and objective perspective, the situation can be seen in a much clearer light. This shift in our awareness is a very effective way to turn down the stress response and regain our composure. It’s a magnificent way to enhance our creativity as well as our health and wellbeing.
