Taming AI

Hello from the FT newsroom. Global leaders in politics, technology and business have gathered at the UK’s Bletchley Park for the inaugural AI Safety Summit this week. The gathering comes at a critical moment: we are on the brink of a novel implementation of AI that will knit itself even more closely into our lives. Will it transform how we communicate?

At Bletchley Park, factions are emerging, the FT has revealed. Warning of an “existential risk to humanity” in the coming decades, Chinese AI scientists have called for controls on the technology that are more stringent than what the UK, EU and US have proposed. Despite the discord, attendees have penned a global commitment to collaborate on safety, dubbed the “Bletchley Declaration”.

My choices this week

  1. A catastrophe is unfolding in Gaza. As Israel responds to the atrocities committed by Hamas on October 7, thousands of people have been killed and about 1mn forcibly displaced from their homes.?The FT editorial board?argues it is time for a humanitarian ceasefire.
  2. Moscow has imposed de facto currency controls on western companies selling their Russian assets, in an attempt to shore up a weakened rouble. Our reporters explain the restrictions that make it “impossible for the seller to receive all the proceeds from the deal”, according to one banker. 3. Odey Asset Management is closing down five months after a Financial Times investigation reported claims of alleged sexual misconduct by its founder, Crispin Odey. Read about how it all unravelled for the London hedge fund giant. (Free to read)
  4. A trove of embarrassing WhatsApp exchanges between former senior government officials have become public this week as part of the UK’s Covid-19 Inquiry. The revelations raise questions about the use of the messaging app for state business: does “rule by WhatsApp” send the wrong message?
  5. New incidences of dementia have unexpectedly declined in recent years in Europe and North America. Global health editor Sarah Neville explores the patterns that might be behind the rare good news.
  6. What was Chandler Bing’s job? A “transponster”? His friends certainly didn’t know. Chandler, depicted brilliantly by Matthew Perry — who died aged 54 last weekend — personified a generation of white-collar workers with his impenetrable nine to five, writes Emma Jacobs. (Free to read)
