Tamil Nadu's Textile Industry Calls for Revival of Processing Parks

For nearly two decades, the Southern India Mills Association (SIMA) has been advocating for textile processing parks with marine discharge facilities in Tamil Nadu’s coastal districts. Despite persistent efforts, two major proposed parks—one in Cuddalore (2005) and another in Ramanathapuram (2015)—have yet to materialize. However, industry stakeholders remain optimistic about their revival.

A Vision for Sustainable Textile Processing

The Cuddalore project, planned on 237 acres, received approval under the Scheme for Integrated Textile Parks and had the backing of both the Central and State governments. It was designed to house 10 large textile units, with a sustainable effluent discharge system into the sea. Unfortunately, local opposition has stalled its progress over the years.

Similarly, the Ramanathapuram project, spread across 250 acres, was supported by the Tamil Nadu government, with an MoU signed in 2015. With an estimated investment of ?500 crore per park, the project had the potential to process 400 tonnes of textiles daily while generating 10,000 direct and 15,000 indirect jobs. Despite the promising economic impact, progress on this project has also been slow.

A Renewed Push for Progress

SIMA continues to work towards resolving these challenges, recognizing the critical role these parks could play in strengthening Tamil Nadu’s textile sector. Currently, a significant portion of the state’s yarn and fabric is sent to northern states for processing. Operationalizing these parks would not only enhance local production capabilities but also reduce dependency on external processing units.

The Road Ahead

The industry remains hopeful that with renewed discussions and strategic interventions, these long-delayed projects will soon take shape. Their revival could transform Tamil Nadu into a major textile processing hub, fostering economic growth and employment opportunities across the region.

What are your thoughts on the revival of these projects? Let’s discuss in the comments.
