Tamas Faitli gave the "best young author presentation" in the 12th International Symposium on Mobile Mapping Technology, May 2023

Researcher Tamas Faitli from the FGI department of remote sensing and photogrammetry took part in the 12th International Symposium on Mobile Mapping Technology, in Padova, Italy on May 24-26. He received the "Best young author presentation" award from the conference. The submitted paper had the title: "Real-time lidar-inertial positioning and mapping for forestry automation", by T. Faitli, T. Hakala,?H. Kaartinen,?J. Hyypp?,?and?A. Kukko. In its essence, a solution for the SLAM problem is presented in a forest (under canopy) setting with real-time limitations, opposing the more available research on this area where the mapping and the accuracy is the top-most priority and therefore those solutions are primarily computed post-processed, which is not suitable for automation projects.

?"It was my first professional conference, and I just wanted to do a great job. I know many presentations are packed into these events, and I wanted to make it as visual and easy to digest as possible, avoiding the heavy math and only communicating the core ideas and the results I got so far. I did not even know there were such awards at these conferences, and seeing my name at the end on the big screen was a pleasant surprise and made me feel very delighted", Tamas commented on his thoughts after receiving this recognition.
