Movers & Shakers - Sportsmanship at Silverstone
Chaotic opening lap. Over the weekend, racing buffs were glued to the Formula 1 British Grand Prix at Silverstone, and the most discussed driver was surprisingly not the day’s winner. With over 117K online mentions (27% positive sentiment), the race attracted a far broader audience than expected after an impressive display of sportsmanship early in the race.
The first lap had fans holding their breaths with two massive crashes. Alfa Romeo driver Zhou Guanyu was sent spinning upside down off the track and over the barrier, while Williams driver Alex Albon was pushed into the pit wall. In the aftermath of the crash, fellow driver George Russell exited his car and ran across the gravel to check on Guanyu, thus sacrificing his place in the race, as per federation rules.
The halo that saved Zhou Guanyu’s life emerged as a key driver of positive sentiment along with George Russell’s sportsmanship.
Driving sentiment. Image Search showed a whopping 11K results of Russell’s selfless act being shared online. Russell was also one of the key drivers of positive sentiment around the accident, along with the “halo”, a recently introduced safety feature consisting of a curved bar to protect the head of the driver. It saved Guanyu’s life as the driver later acknowledged, thanking the medical staff and well wishers. A combination of safety measures, effective medical staff, and quality sportsmanship ensured that an otherwise exhilarating race did not end in tragedy. The FIA (Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile) confirmed that both drivers involved in the crash (Guanyu & Albon) were in good health and had been released from hospital.
Exact Image Search showed that the internet was filled with visuals of George Russell’s selfless act of sportsmanship to check on his fellow driver.
