Talking transition with our investors

Earlier this week I had the opportunity to speak to some of those who own and manage shares in bp at The Institutional Investors Group on Climate Change (IIGCC) annual general meeting.

Our work with this group of investors has helped evolve the very way we think about the energy transition. And it is this dialogue that continues to help us to understand what the world wants from bp.

To achieve net zero, the world needs to transition and it can only achieve this goal if the energy system undergoes a massive change. We know we don’t have all the answers, and we hear the request for us to show leadership.

And I say lead – because we’re in a privileged position to make a broad impact, even if the transition cannot happen at the flick of a switch.

It needs companies committed to lead change in hard-to-abate sectors like our own – where we can make significant reductions on emissions.

We have the will and skill – including the thousands of engineers and scientists we employ.

We have the reach to help – thanks to the nearly 80 host countries we work in partnership with.

We have a diversified approach – providing multiple energy sources and knitting them together.

And we have the opportunity to provide scale - for low carbon businesses that need acceleration.

Re-wiring the world’s energy system is going to be hard work – it will take all stakeholders. But by working together with investor groups like IIGCC - and keeping that dialogue going – we can really make a difference.

Work toward cleaner clime, but ensure energy options as no one knows the future. One option for anything can be a hostage situation.

“hard-to-abate sectors” is that a reference to hydrogen?
