I go way back with Joe Nocera – to the 1980s. Not only is Joe a good friend, but he’s one of the country’s top business journalists. Sports reporting is another specialty of his. Here are four insights from Joe about college sports that I gleaned from our recent conservation for the Pickens Podcast:
College athletes are employees in everything but name. If a person works like an employee and is treated like an employee, that makes them an employee, doesn’t it? Not in the NCAA’s mind. That’s why Joe titled his new book about college sports, INDENTURED.
It’s time to start paying student-athletes. Right now, student-athletes are the low men and women on the totem pole. The NCAA rules the roost, and the colleges own and operate lucrative franchises. Let’s give student-athletes the respect they deserve and pay them.
Conferences should set student-athlete pay, not the NCAA. Why not the ruling body of college sports? Because it would be a clear-cut violation of anti-trust laws.
P.S. College sports need to be completely revamped anyway. Our current system of recruiting makes under-the-table payments a routine occurrence. Let’s get the sleaze out of college recruiting and make it above board by offering straightforward incentives to student-athletes.

8 年I'm not in total disagreement with the idea, However how would it affect the player going to the NBA? Are they not getting a full scholarship?
Superior customer service and care achieved through honest and direct sales approach
8 年Not a horrible concept but where do you think the money will come from?? Do you honestly think the NCAA would just open their wallets and say..."here you go kids here's your paycheque" and let's remember that they are just kids. Look at the wealth of rookie pros these days and how often they are in the negative spotlight because of this wealth and immaturity. In the end we as consumers would be paying the increase in ticket costs to cover their wages and it would just put way too many young "adults" in a situation that begs for guidance, and most of them won't get it. (the guidance that is)
