The weather is changing, and many people are beginning to notice problems with their older windows. CTV paid a visit to one of Centra’s current projects to speak to our Window Geeks and learn more about what homeowners should watch out for in fall.
Window Issues in the Fall
As energy bills rise in fall, improving window efficiency is essential. Regular maintenance of your windows can help keep them in good shape. Clean your windows and inspect them for damage, as addressing minor issues early prevents larger problems later.
If your windows are old or drafty, consider upgrading to energy-efficient models with improved insulating properties. These modern windows can significantly enhance your home’s comfort and efficiency during the colder months. Start your search for replacements early to prepare your home adequately.
To combat drafts, inspect window seals and weatherstripping for wear and tear. Over time, these can lead to unwanted cold air entering your home. For minor gaps, use weatherproofing tape or caulk as temporary fixes. Draft stoppers are also effective. Place them at the base of windows or doors to block drafts. For severe issues, window insulation kits can provide additional protection, although they may obstruct your view.
Managing window condensation is also important. Condensation on the exterior of the glass panes is normal in cooler weather, especially in humid areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Ensure proper ventilation in these spaces to reduce moisture buildup. However, if you notice condensation between the panes, the window seal may have failed, indicating it’s time for replacement.

Choosing the Best Window Company
Choosing the right company for window and door replacement is crucial, especially given the significant investment involved. Look for a company with extensive experience, as longevity in the industry tends to demonstrate reliability. Reviews play a key role – check platforms like Google and Home Stars to gauge customer satisfaction. A lack of feedback can be a warning sign. Exceptional customer service is always a priority, and with a team of Employee Owners, Centra ensures professionalism and accountability throughout the entire renovation process.
Warranties are also essential. Be wary of ‘lifetime’ warranties, and make sure you ask exactly what is covered and for how long. Centra’s warranty, for example, offers 30-year coverage for the frame, the glass, and the installation, whereas many ‘lifetime’ warranties cover you for 25 or 20 years, and sometimes only on certain elements of the window.
