Talking about algorithms, the STASI, KitKats, Google, GDPR, data, privacy and the digital caste system with Adam Fraser

I spent four years working in Australia back in the 1990s. Back then it really was on the other side of the world. Not in the sense that marcoms practice there was any less sophisticated or effective than in the supposed 'leading' centres of London and New York, but more because what went on in Australia tended to stay in Australia. No more.

There is, of course, Mark Ritson - whom I believe lives in Australia, but might as well be based on the International Space Station, or possibly just the ether, in terms of his perspective and where his thoughts seep into marketing consciousness. Likewise Ritson's intellectual opponent, Byron Sharp. To that list of good global things coming out of Australia I would also add Adam Fraser who back in 2015 set up the EchoJunction Podcast with a view to capturing the thoughts of the great and the good of the digital marketing space. His first two interviewees were Scott Brinker and Jay Baer - which gives you an indication of the ambition to seek out the big hitters. His most recent interview was with Scott Monty (if you don't know who any of these people are, you should). You really should check out his back catalogue because I can guarantee you will find someone there talking about something you need to find-out about.

I am proud to say I was the eighth contributor and have put in two appearances since then, the latest having been prompted by the article I wrote on privacy, algorithms and a datafied society. Adam says it is my best yet. I thought I 'went on a bit' but then this is a subject where I do get a bit carried away, because I am so frustrated at how useless the conventional media coverage on this issue has been. Anyway - I can let you be the judge. Take a listen.

Thanks Richard - the Kit Kat and Stasi article still the best piece I have read on “the Cambridge Analytica thing”. Been great hosting you 3 x on the podcast.
